Police issue alert on business robberies


The Chicago Police Department Area North Bureau of Detectives has issued an alert warning businesses about a series of armed robberies that have occurred the 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District since March 3.

In most of the incidents, a man approached the cashier, displayed a knife and announced a robbery, according to police.

In the first incident, an employee reported that the Subway restaurant, 5316 N. Milwaukee Ave., was robbed at about 10 p.m. Sunday, March 3, according to police. The 17-year-old employee reported that a man placed a bag on the counter, threatened him with a knife and took $275, police said.

An employee reported that a man tried to rob at the L.A. Tan salon, 5255 N. Milwaukee Ave., at about 4:50 p.m. Thursday, March 7, according to police. The 19-year-old clerk reported that the man displayed a knife and demanded that she open the cash register drawer but that he fled empty-handed when she locked the drawer and pushed an alarm button, police said.

A cab driver reported that he was robbed at about 5:05 p.m. the same day in the 4900 block of West Irving Park Road, according to police. The 50-year-old cab driver reported that as he was stopped at a traffic signal at Milwaukee and Foster avenues, a man approached him and asked for a ride to Irving Park Road and Cicero Avenue, and that after he agreed to take the man as a fare, the man asked him to wait for a few minutes in a nearby parking lot and left the car, returning a few minutes later, police said.

The driver reported that while they were driving on Irving Park Road the man asked to be let out at Lamon Avenue, and that when he stopped the cab, the man displayed a knife and took $23 from him, police said.

An employee reported that the Dunkin Donuts store, 4354 N. Central Ave., was robbed at about 11 p.m. Friday, March 8, according to police. The 20-year-old employee reported that a man displayed a knife, used the knife to force open the cash register drawer and took $90, police said. Officers recovered that knife at the scene, police said.

The man is described as white, age 20 to 30, 5-7 to 5-10 and 170 to 180 pounds, with a medium complexion and wearing a black jacket or a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and gym shoes.
