Arrest in fatal shooting

A man was charged with first degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy on March 15.

Officers stopped a vehicle at about 6:45 p.m. Saturday, March 21, in the 2600 block of North Laramie Avenue, and a passenger was arrested after officers discovered a handgun in his possession that allegedly was used to kill Giovanni Matos in the 5800 block of West Patterson Avenue, according to police.

Two teenagers reported that while they were walking with Matos at about 12:50 p.m. March 15, two men in a silver Toyota Avalon approached them and asked their gang affiliation, and that the passenger got out of the car and shot at them with a semi-automatic handgun, according to police. Matos was struck in the head, and he was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Hospital, police said.

The suspect was identified by police as Antwan Elliot, age 21, of the 1600 block of North Oak Park Avenue.
