Local Crime from 16th District 12-14-16





THE OWNER of Friendly Food and Liquor, 4262 N. Milwaukee Ave., reported that he exchanged gunfire with robbers at about 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 44-year-old man reported that he was with a 29-year-old man in the store when two men displayed handguns, took a gun case containing a magazine for a rifle, a cell phone, $100 in cash, six bottles of cognac and the cash register and fled out the back door to a minivan, according to police. The man reported that he followed the men with his rifle to get the van’s license plate number and that the men fired their guns at him and he fired five shots at them, striking the rear glass of the vehicle, which fled south on Milwaukee, police said.

A MAN REPORTED that he was robbed at about 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, outside his home in the 7500 block of North Oleander Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 67-year-old man reported that after he parked his car in his garage, two men wearing ski masks displayed handguns and took $420 from him and that one of them demanded "all of the money" and they both struck him on the head with the guns, causing numerous lacerations, according to police. The man said that he had returned from a casino in Indiana, police said.

A MAN AND a woman were arrested after they allegedly attacked an off-duty police officer at about 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the 5100 block of North Chester Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The off-duty officer reported that after a car turned without a signal, he gestured toward the turn signal indicator on the vehicle, and that a woman and a man got out of the Kia and walked toward him, according to police. The man said that he announced his office and that the woman choked him, punched him and gouged his eye and the man punched him in the face and chest, police said.
The officer reported that the two entered their vehicle and that the driver drove in reverse, striking his Dodge Charger, leaving the Kia inoperable, according to police. The officer said that the man kicked him in the groin and the right knee and that the two threatened him until officers arrived, police said.
The suspects were identified by police as Luis Barajas, age 35, and Joanna M. Olivo, age 32, both of the 5300 block of North Chester Avenue.

A COUPLE reported that they were the victims of a scam at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at their home in the 6200 block of North Caldwell Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
An 81-year-old woman reported that she answered the door and a man told her that he was working on speed bumps in the alley and asked her to look at the work, according to police. A 72-year-old man reported that he awoke and saw a man in the home who told him that his wife was looking for him outside, and the couple later discovered that a ring valued at $1,300, a watch valued at $2,000, earrings valued at $400 and $1,200 in cash were missing, police said.

A WOMAN reported that a man attempted to rob her at about 9:05 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at the automated teller machine at Chase Bank, 5050 N. Cumberland Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 21-year-old woman reported that a man grabbed her arm and attempted but failed to take her debit card from the ATM, according to police.

AT&T EMPLOYEES reported that several EnerSys batteries were stolen from storage cabinets in alleys between Dec. 6 and Dec. 8, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Batteries were reported stolen from storage cabinets in the 5700 and 6100 blocks of West Montrose Avenue, the 4300 block of North Central Avenue, the 4400 block of North Mobile Avenue, the 4300 block of North Cicero Avenue and the 4600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, according to police. The total value of the batteries was reported at about $11,000, police said.

THEFTS of vehicles were reported between Nov. 24 and Dec. 12, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thefts were reported in the 5200 block of West Berteau Avenue, the 4900 block of West Roscoe Street, the 4800 block of West Grace Street, the 5200 block of West School Street, the 3500 block and 6300 blocks of North Nagle Avenue, the 3800 block of North Harlem Avenue, the 4300 and 6000 blocks of North Milwaukee Avenue, the 5300 block of West Melrose Street, the 5200, 5500 and 7700 blocks of block of West Belmont Avenue and the 5500 block of West Byron Street, according to police.

A WOMAN reported that a man took her cash at about 3:50 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at the Irving Cicero Currency Exchange, 4814 W. Irving Park Road, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 55-year-old woman reported that a teller exchanged her check for $322 in cash and that a man standing next to her took the money and fled, according to police.

A MAN REPORTED that his home in the 5600 block of West Cornelia Avenue was burglarized between 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, and 8 a.m. the following day, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered that the back door had been forced open and that a drill valued at $200 and two stilts valued at $640 were missing, according to police.

A WOMAN reported that her home in the 5000 block of West Montrose Avenue was burglarized between 9:45 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the front door was open and that a laptop computer valued at $700 was missing, according to police.

A WOMAN reported that her home in the 3600 block of North Nordica Avenue was burglarized between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that $4,300 in cash, 100 Euros and 110 British pounds were missing, according to police.
