Sears at Golf Mill in Niles closing
by BRIAN NADIG
A liquidation sale has begun at the Sears department store at the Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles following a recent announcement that the store would close by the end of the year.
The struggling retail chain has been shutting down stores around the country. The company notified the state on Sept. 27 that it would permanently close the store at 400 Golf Mill Center and layoff 75 employees beginning Dec. 16, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification report. The employees are not members of a union.
Businesses are required to notify the state through WARN reports when they will lay off employees.
The last Sears in Chicago closed in July at 4730 W. Irving Park Road in Six Corners, where a retail-residential development is now planned.
Sears has anchored Golf Mill since the retail center opened nearly 60 years ago at Milwaukee Avenue and Gold Road. The center was later converted to an indoor mall in which shoppers must walk through Sears to get from one end to the other.
Sears was founded 125 years ago and was once the country’s biggest retailer.
