Charges in fatal stabbing

A man was charged with first degree murder after he allegedly stabbed a woman to death at about 4:55 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, outside her home in the 4800 block of North Moody Avenue, according to Chicago police.

The suspect was identified by police as Alberto Gaytan, age 42, of the 3000 block of West Ainslie Street.

Gaytan was arrested shortly after the incident and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement until the murder charges were filed on Dec. 11, according to police.

The woman’s neighbor reported that he heard screams outside and that when he went to investigate he saw the woman lying on the ground and a man leaning over her holding her purse, according to police. The man reported that he shouted and that the man fled in a car, police said.

The woman, who had stab wounds and slash wounds to her throat, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The neighbor reported that he saw the man walking up and down the street for about 40 minutes prior to the incident, police said.

The victim was identified by police as Maria Gonzalez, age 39, of the 4800 block of Moody.
