After a lengthy permitting and licensing process, the Mexican-style ice cream and candy shop Chiquita Scoops is planning to open Saturday, Sept. 27, at 6140 1/2 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Gladstone Park.
“I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulder,” Joel Gonzalez, who owns the store along with Mireya Garcia, said this week after learning that the store had passed its final inspections and the license was being issued after numerous delays.
“It was a long time coming,” he added. The permitting process began last October.
Gonzalez called it “a learning process” dealing with the city but said that his family is eager to welcome the community to the shop this Saturday. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held from 11:30 a.m. to noon and the first
10 customers starting at noon will receive a free kids scoop and the first 50 a goodie bag. At 2 p.m. washable tattoos and face painting will be offered, with an array of food specials later in the day.
The owners named the shop Chiquita Scoops after their daughter Ximena. “It’s because of our daughter’s love for ice cream. ‘Chiquita’ means little girl, (and) we wanted to bring some Mexican and Puerto Rican culture to Gladstone Park. … This business is immigrant founded and woman-owned,” Gonzalez said earlier in the year.
They also have a younger son Emilio and live in the area. “I’m a Gladstone-Norwood resident since 2005,” Gonzalez said. “I went to Taft and Onahan.” Garcia previously lived in nearby Albany Park.
The menu will include a wide variety of dessert options and some prepared lunch, dinner or snack food, including nachos, tortas, chicharronnes and elote, or Mexican street corn.
The dessert menu includes 16 flavors of ice cream, and a variety of paletas, which are Mexican-style popsicles.
For those looking for a more interesting option, the ice cream can be paired with waffles, mini-pancakes or churros. Banana splits also are on the menu, and a variety of Mexican candy also is being offered.
The planned hours are noon to 9 p.m. daily, with a 10 p.m. closing on weekends.
