Fire in Sauganash spurs donation drive for family
by KEVIN GROSS
Some members of the Queen of All Saints Basilica are holding a donation drive for three Sauganash residents whose home burned and their dog died in a fire last week.
The fire occurred in the 5800 block of North Kilpatrick Avenue at about 12:45 p.m. Friday, July 6, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The family of three was not inside the home at the time of the fire, but the family’s dog died in the blaze, according to police.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and there is no indication of arson or foul play at the time of the report, and a member of the Office of Fire Investigation believes that the fire might have started on a kitchen countertop, police said.
A GoFund me page has been set up on July 6 and to date $12,540 has been raised.
"Losing everything you own is a hopeless and overwhelming feeling, and it is times like this we rely on our friends and family to pick us up to help get us back on our feet again," the site states.
A resident said in an e-mail that the family is physically okay but "between the fire, smoke and water damage they have lost everything," and that some church members are seeking donations of needed items including gift cards for groceries, restaurants, toys, books, art supplies and personal items.
"This is an unbelievable tragedy, and the Queens community is always there to help," the resident said.

Eileen Neis, a member of the church said, "when I was young we had a house fire ourselves. The outpouring of love and donations was amazing, and I feel this is a way to give back." She said she would accept donations at her home at 5019 W. Balmoral Ave.
To donate items, call Neis at 773-777-6811.
