Local Crime from 16th District 10-23-19
TWO MEN REPORTED that their vehicles were damaged by gunfire at about 3:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the 4900 block of West Cornelia Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 25-year-old man reported that he heard loud arguing and then gunshots outside and a 43-year-old man reported that he went outside and saw two males running away west, and the 25-year-old reported that he discovered three bullet holes to the front left fender and a bullet hole to the left headlight of his 2010 Dodge Avenger while the other man reported that the rear windshield to his 2010 Chevrolet Malibu was shattered, according to police.
The males were described as about 5-6 and 120 to 130 pounds, and one was further described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark blue pants.
A MAN REPORTED that a man attacked him and pointed a gun at him while driving at about 6:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in the 5200 block of North Nagle Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 30-year-old man reported that he and his friend met a man at a bar who offered to drive them in his black 1990’s-era Ford Explorer, and at some point during the drive the man pulled into a strip mall parking lot on Nagle, started yelling at him, punched him and displayed a handgun from his waistband, according to police. The man reported that he got out of the vehicle to take a photo of the license plate when the driver shoved him to the ground, punched him and then took his cellphone before driving away west on Higgins, police said.
The man was described as white, about age 26 or 27, approximately 6-4 and 250 to 260 pounds, with short red/Auburn colored hair.
A MAN REPORTED that a man attacked him at about 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Mobil gas station, 4409 N. Central Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 32-year-old man reported that he was exiting the gas station store when an a man approached, accused him of talking about his family and then struck him in the face with a blunt object before the man drove away in a gray Plymouth vehicle, according to police.
The man was described as white/Hispanic, age 30 to 40, 5-6 to 5-8, 170 to 190 pounds, and brown haired.
A BRAWL occurred between students at Foreman College and Career Academy, 3235 N. Leclaire Ave., at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Police were on scene monitoring after-school dismissal outside when several males approached a 16-year-old student and started arguing, and that as they tried to separate the students a physical altercation ensued and the number of students fighting continued to grow in number, according to police. No one was arrested or charged at the time of the report, and school employees intended to take proper action per school policy, police said.
A MAN REPORTED that his property was stolen at about 1:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, as he rode a train through the CTA Jefferson Park Blue Line station, 4917 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 72-year-old man reported that he was sitting on the train and looking at his gray cellphone when a man snatched the phone valued at $1,500 from his hand and ran off the train as the doors closed, and that the phone was last traced to a location in the 4700 block of West Harrison Street, according to police.
The man was described as black, age 20 to 25, and about 5-7 and 130 pounds.
TWO EMPLOYEES of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 8765 W. Higgins Road, reported that their property was stolen at about 12:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The two women, age 52 and 58, reported that when they returned to their closed office from lunch they discovered missing a red wallet valued at $50 and containing a credit card, two department store cards and $250 in cash and another wallet containing four bank cards, and surveillance footage showed that an unknown man entered their office and took their wallets, according to police.
The man was described as black and wearing a black buttoned shirt, black pants and black dress shoes.
AN OFF-DUTY officer reported that a personal vehicle exploded at about 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, near Peterson and Austin avenues, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The officer reported that she heard a loud explosion and discovered severe damage to her parked 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Chicago Fire Department firefighters, investigators, and arson and bomb squads responded to the scene but were unable to determine the exact cause of the explosion at the time of the report, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that the wheels to his vehicle were stolen between 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, and 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, in the 4800 block of North Mason Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 22-year-old man reported that when he returned outside he discovered that his 2019 Honda Civic was sitting on blocks with all four wheels and tires missing, and that the wheel rotor areas of the car were further damaged, according to police.
SEVERAL burglaries and thefts from vehicles were reported in the area between 6:30 p.m Tuesday, Oct. 15, and 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Vehicular burglaries were reported in the 3200 block of North Harlem Avenue, the 4700 block of North Central Avenue, the 5200 block of West Pensacola Avenue, the 6100 block of West Irving Park Road, the 6100 block of West Newport Avenue and the 7300 block of West Higgins Avenue, according to police. In two of the incidents no damage to the vehicle was found, and the two vehicle owners may have left their vehicle doors unlocked, police said.
SEVERAL stolen vehicles were reported in the area between 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Vehicles were reported stolen from the 4100 block of North Lavergne Avenue, the 5100 block of North Mulligan Avenue, the 5100 block of West Winona Street, the 6300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and the 6300 block of North Sayre Avenue, according to police.
A U.S. Postal Service employee reported that mail was stolen from her truck between 12:50 p.m. and 1:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the 5200 block of West Berteau Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that she discovered that about 100 various pieces of mail were missing from the vehicle as she delivered the route along Berteau, and that there were no signs of forced entry to the Gruman LLV-style delivery truck that possibly had nonfunctional locks, according to police.
AN EMPLOYEE of the World-Wide Liquors store, 3500 N. Harlem Ave., reported that the store was burglarized at about 4 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned to work he discovered that the glass front door was broken, and surveillance showed that two people broke in and stole 110 bottles of tequila valued at about $3,965 total, 22 bottles of cognac valued at about $361 total, 15 bottles of wine valued at about $845 total, four cartons of cigarettes, two boxes of cigars and a box of lighters before they fled, according to police.
Both people were described as wearing black jackets and black pants, and one was further described as wearing a white hospital-style mask and the other as wearing a black mask.
A WOMAN reported that her house in the 5500 block of North Nottingham Avenue was burglarized between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered the basement window was open with dents to the frame and that footprints were left on a basement bed’s sheets, but that it appeared nothing was missing at the time of the report, according to police.
A TEENAGER reported a burglary attempt to her house in the 5300 block of North Oriole Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The female reported that she was sleeping when she heard that the rear window lift and make a popping sound, and that she ran to her mother’s room and called police, and upon further investigation it appeared that no entry was made, according to police.
A WOMAN reported a burglary attempt to her home in the 3600 block of North Newcastle Avenue sometime before 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the glass window on the rear basement door was broken, but that it appeared no entry was made inside, according to police.
