Local Crime from 16th District 2-12-14
A MAN REPORTED that he was the victim of a scam at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at his Northwest Side home, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 78-year-old man reported that he received a phone call informing him that he was the winner of $2 million and a new car, and that the caller said that $7,000 in taxes should be paid before he could receive his winnings, according to police. The resident said that he paid the $7,000 and wrote an additional check for $15,000 before he caught on to the scam, police said. Police were able to stop the $15,000 check from being delivered, police said.
A MAN REPORTED that he was attacked at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in the 4900 block of West Cuyler Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 19-year-old man reported that while he was sitting in his parked car, two men approached, and that one of them smashed the rear windows and hit him in the face with a pipe, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that he was attacked at about 10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, in the 3200 block of North Leclaire Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 18-year-old man reported that as he was getting out of his car, three men approached him and started an argument, and that when he began to drive away, one of the men opened the door and tried to stab him with a knife, according to police.
TWO TEENAGERS were arrested after they allegedly broke into a car at about 5 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, in the 3300 block of North Plainfield Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A man reported he saw the teens rummaging through a car, according to police. The suspects were linked to two other car burglaries in the area because of the merchandise found in their possession, police said.
TWO TEENAGERS were charged with battery following their arrest at about 3:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Taft High School, 6530 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A female Taft student reported that two female students, one from Taft and one from Schurz High School, attacked her, according to police. School security guards reported that when they approached the two girls, two male students, one from Taft and one from Schurz, intervened and began fighting them, police said.
A MAN WAS charged with retail theft following his arrest at about 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the Mariano’s, 5353 N. Elston Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
An employee reported that he saw a man put a bottle of vodka, a bottle of beer, a package of energy drinks and a case of alcohol valued at a total of $40.67 in his coat and leave the store without paying for the items, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Serhiy Markin, age 32, of the 5000 block of West Diversey Avenue.
A WOMAN reported that her home in the 5000 block of North Montclare Avenue was burglarized between 6:30 and 11:35 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the lock on the front door was broken and that a wedding ring valued at $1,500, a necklace valued at $300, an antique pocket watch valued at $300, two passports, documents and $7,000 in cash were missing, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that her home in the 6200 block of North Cicero Avenue was burglarized between 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, and 12:15 a.m. the following day, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the back door was open and that a Play Station 4 game device, a laptop computer, a computer tablet and a guitar were missing, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that her home in the 5700 block of West Addison Street was burglarized between 6:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the frame and chain of the rear door were broken and that three chains valued at $2,000 and $800 in cash were missing, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that his home in the 6300 block of West Lawrence Avenue was burglarized at about noon, Monday, Feb. 10, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that his neighbor saw a man leave the side door of his house and run away, and that he discovered that two watches valued at $400 were missing, according to police.
