Local Crime from 16th District 2-26-14
A MAN WAS arrested on burglary, theft and drug charges at about 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in the 4700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
After a series of thefts at a United Parcel Service lockbox, officers saw a man on a bicycle stop at the box, enter a code, open the box and look at the packages inside, according to police. The man was arrested after a brief chase, police said.
Officers also discovered a packet containing a substance suspected of being heroin in a cigarette box, police said.
The man’s home in the 5400 block of West Windsor Avenue was searched the following day, and officers discovered several packages and receipts including one for a laptop computer which the man’s girlfriend said she had pawned for $150 at a Belmont Avenue pawn shop, according to police. The woman was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property, police said.
The suspects were identified by police as Alexander Kurchiy, age 30, and Tatiana Yashina, age 25, both of the Windsor Avenue address.
TWO MEN were arrested after they allegedly threatened an off-duty police officer at about 4:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, in the 6300 block of North Caldwell Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The officer reported that as he was driving, a car containing two men turned onto Caldwell from Lenox Avenue and a passenger shouted obscenities at him and made gang gestures, according to police. The officer said that the passenger got out of the car Caldwell and Central avenues, shouted at him, flashed gang signs, threatened to kill him and kept his hand in his shirt implying that he had a weapon, police said. The man identified himself as an officer, drew his weapon and arrested the men, police said.
The suspects were identified by police as Jonathan M. Michalik, age 22, of the 5400 block of South Narragansett Avenue, and Michael L. Cunnigham, age 24, of the 5700 block of West 59th Street.
A TEENAGER reported that she was robbed at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the 5700 block of West Henderson Street, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 17-year-old teen reported that a man pushed her to the ground and took her cell phone valued at $120, according to police.
A COUPLE reported that two men broke into their home in the 6400 block of North New England Avenue at about 9:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 76-year-old man reported that he heard a person rummaging through his belongings in another room, and that when he confronted a man who was coming up the stairs with a pillowcase, the man and a second man who was standing by the door ran to a black sport utility vehicle driven by a third man, according to police. The couple reported that that 10 gold necklaces valued at $3,500, miscellaneous perfume valued at $600 and $600 in cash were missing, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that two men attempted to break into her home in the 4500 block of North Monitor Avenue at about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 36-year-old woman reported that the home’s burglar alarm was activated and that a neighbor reported that two men were seen in front of her home and one of them pried open the front door, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that a woman assaulted her at about 10:05 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, in the 5500 block of West Montrose Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 39-year-old woman reported that while she was at the Montrose Central Currency Exchange, 4354 N. Central Ave., a patron made disparaging remarks about people not being able to speak English, according to police. The woman said that as she was riding as a passenger in her son’s car later, the same woman approached the vehicle, shouted comments about terrorists and threw hot coffee at her face, police said.
AN EMPLOYEE reported that three men stole items from Cardinal Liquors, 3501 N. Central Ave., at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that three men entered the store and that one of them shortchanged the lottery cashier of $150 by making change until the cashier got confused, according to police. The employee said that one of the men also concealed a bottle of liquor valued at $57 in his jacket while a third man distracted the employees, police said.
TWO WOMEN reported that their home in the 6200 block of West Addison Street was burglarized between noon and 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The women reported that when they returned home they discovered that a rear window was broken and that a 55-inch television set, a laptop computer, a Play Station video game console, 13 watches and earrings were missing, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that her home in the 5100 block of West Sunnyside Avenue was burglarized between 5:45 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the front door had been forced open and that a 32-inch television set, a printer and medication were missing, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that several vehicles were damaged at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, in the 5900 block of North East Circle Avenue and in the 5900 block of North Nina Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that as he was walking his dog he saw a gray sport utility vehicle speeding from Nina Avenue onto North East Circle Avenue with a passenger hanging out the window swinging a baseball bat and breaking side mirrors, according to police. Seven or eight cars were reported damaged, police said.
