Local Crime from 16th District 3-27-19
A MAN REPORTED that he was carjacked at gunpoint at about 7 p.m. Sunday, March 24, in the 3600 block of North Lavergne Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that he was parking his gray van when two people drove their vehicle in front of him, pointed handguns at him and demanded his keys, and that one man took his gray van and drove north on Lavergne while the other man drove their original vehicle west on Patterson, according to police.
Both men were described as white/ Hispanic, age 18 to 28, with brown eyes and light brown complexions. The man who took the van was described as 5-7 to 6-0, 140 to 170 pounds and wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, and the other as 5-6 to 5-11, 220 to 300 pounds, and wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt.
A MAN AND A woman reported that two men tried to steal their vehicle at gunpoint at about 1:20 a.m. Monday, March 25, in the 5200 block of West Cullom Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man and the woman reported that they were in their parked 2010 Honda Civic when an older-model light brown van drove next to them and two men exited from the sliding door before one man holding a fire extinguisher demanded his wallet as another man tapped their window with a handgun, and that when they refused to comply the man with the fire extinguisher broke the Honda’s windshield before they drove away in the van driven by a third man, according to police.
One man was described as white/Hispanic, 6-0 to 6-2 and 220 to 250 pounds, and another man was described as white/Hispanic, 5-8 to 5-11 and 150 to 175 pounds.
A MAN REPORTED that he was robbed at gunpoint at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, March 24, in the 4000 block of North Lawler Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 20-year-old man reported that he parked his gray 2008 Mazda when a silver colored minivan drove next to him and two men exited and one pointed to a handgun in his waistband and they both demanded him out of the Mazda, according to police. The man reported that they took his car keys and cellphone, and that one of them tried to drive his Mazda but was unable to shift the car gear into drive, and that both men fled north on Lawler in the minivan, police said.
Both men were described as white/Hispanic.
THREE MALES were arrested for allegedly burglarizing vehicles at about 2 a.m. Friday, March 22, in the 5800 block of North Moody Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officers were called into the area regarding several males that were checking door handles and stopped a vehicle that was blocking an alley on Moody, and as officers approached they saw a passenger throw a backpack out the window, according to police.
After the driver failed to show a valid driver’s license or proof of vehicle insurance, officers searched the vehicle and backpack and found numerous cell phones and phone cords, a yellow metal medallion, a pair of handcuffs, and credit cards that did not belong to the occupants, and the males were arrested after at least three nearby residents identified the items as having previously been inside their vehicles, police said.
The suspects were identified by police as Angel Reyes, age 19, of the 1600 block of North Harding Avenue, Alex Gutierrez, age 18, of the 1900 block of North Lawndale Avenue, and as a 17-year-old male.
A MAN WAS stabbed in the parking lot of the Popeye’s restaurant, 5248 W. Belmont Ave., at about 5 p.m. Friday, March 22, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 50-year-old man reported that he stopped at the restaurant to let his child’s mother use the restroom when he recognized an acquaintance who knew both of them, and that they started arguing in the restaurant and continued the argument outside and the man pushed the 50-year-old to the ground, pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the right elbow, according to police.
The 50-year-old man reported that the man then went into a silver sport utility vehicle driven by another man, took out a mallet and started chasing him, and that he ran away east on Belmont and the two men continued to chase him in the SUV while shouting gang slogans and attempting to hit him before the men drove away on North Laramie Avenue, and that he later transported himself to Community First Hospital for treatment, police said.
The men were described as white/ Hispanic.
In related news, a different man reported that he was robbed at about 6 p.m. that day, in the parking lot of the restaurant, according to police.
A 55-year-old man reported that he started arguing with a man whom he recognized as his niece’s boyfriend when the man displayed a knife and punched him in the face, and that when he fell to the ground an unknown amount of cash fell out of his pockets and the man took his cash, police said.
The man was described as white/Hispanic.
A WOMAN reported that she was attacked at a bus stop in the 6000 block of West Addison Street at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 18-year-old woman reported that she was sitting near the intersection of Addison and Austin Avenue when two women approached and started yelling at her and that one woman struck her in the head with a pad lock before they ran away, according to police. The woman reported that her mother later drove her West Suburban Hospital for treatment, according to police.
The women were described as black and about age 18.
In related news, another fight was reported at the same intersection about half an hour later that same day, according to police.
Three 18-year-old women reported that a group of five women exited a silver 2014 Ford Escape and a black sedan, sprayed them with chemical pepper spray and kicked them on the ground before they drove away east on Addison, and the three women were transported to Community First Medical Center for treatment, police said.
A TEENAGER WAS arrested for allegedly threatening a man with a gun at about 4:50 p.m. Monday, March 25, at Dunham Park, 4638 N. Melvina Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 20-year-old man reported that he was jogging when a teenage male started speaking to him, and that when he stopped the male said "keep running or I’ll put a bullet in your back" while pointing a revolver at him, according to police. Officers found a group of three males on scene and arrested one male after discovering a .32-caliber revolver in his pants pocket as well as a small plastic bag containing a substance suspected of being marijuana, police said.
The suspect was identified by police as a 17-year-old male.
A MAN REPORTED that he was threatened with a gun in an apparent road rage incident at about 1:45 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in the 3700 block of North Laramie Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 38-year-old man reported that he was driving west on Addison Street when he nearly collided with a black Mercedes E40, and that the Mercedes continued to follow him until he pulled over on Laramie and the male Mercedes passenger stepped out, walked over, pulled out a black handgun and said "I’m going to kill you, get out of the car" before he slashed the man’s rear passenger-side tire with a knife and then drove away east on Grace Street, according to police.
A WOMAN AND her daughter reported that a man attempted to set their home on fire in the 3400 block of North Cicero Avenue at about 5:50 p.m. Thursday, March 21, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that her daughter smelled something burning, came into the kitchen and saw a man’s hand coming through the window and dropping a burning piece of paper into the home, and officers discovered that the window screen was burnt and found an open can of tire shine next to the window that may have been used as flame accelerant, according to police.
A MAN WAS arrested for allegedly threatening a man with a gun in an apparent gang-related incident at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the 4700 block of West Cornelia Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A man reported that he was arguing with his girlfriend on the street with two relatives nearby, when two men approached and one man shouted gang slogans and pointed a handgun at them, and that the two men chased them down the street before driving away in a late-model BMW vehicle, according to police.
Officers stopped a vehicle matching a description at Belmont and Menard avenues, and one man was arrested after he was identified and the other man was detained, police said.
The suspect was identified by police as Jose Figueroa, age 19, of the 2900 block of North Linder Avenue.
A WOMAN reported that she saw two men stealing from her vehicle at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday, March 24, in an alley in the 4700 block of North Lavergne Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that she parked her vehicle in the alley to check a mail box, and that when she returned she saw two men inside her vehicle taking her workout bag containing a bottle of prescription muscle relaxant pills, four articles of clothing valued at $100, a Coach-brand wallet valued at $87 and two credit cards, and that the two men fled when they saw her approach and one man carrying a pipe shouted to her "this is what you get," according to police.
SEVERAL THEFTS of car batteries from Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles were reported between 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, and noon Thursday, March 21, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thefts were reported in the 5100 block of West Hutchinson Street, the 5800 block of West Byron Street, the 4800 block of West Roscoe Street, and two in the 4900 block of West Roscoe Street, according to police.
SEVERAL THEFTS of catalytic converters were reported in the area between noon Sunday, March 24, and 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thefts were reported in the 4800 block of West Berwyn Avenue, the 5400 block of North Long Avenue, the 5300 block of North Lotus Avenue, the 5300 block of North Lockwood Avenue, the 5300 block of North Linder Avenue, the 5200 block of North Lind Avenue, and the 5300 and 5400 blocks of North Ludlam Avenue, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that her home in the 4500 block of North Mobile Avenue was burglarized at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 24, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the rear door was broken and that a laptop computer valued at $1,000, a 32-inch television valued at $200 and a checkbook were missing, according to police.
