Local Crime from 16th District 7-3-19
A MAN WAS shot in an apparent gang-related incident at about 9 a.m. Sunday, July 7, in an alley in the 4900 block of West Newport Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 24-year-old man reported that he was smoking outside with his girlfriend and a friend when a black Jeep Cherokee with tinted windows circled the block twice and two men exited the Jeep and one of them fired eight to ten shots at him, striking him in the left ear, according to police. The man later walked into Community First Medical Center for treatment, police said.
One man was described as white/Hispanic, about 220 pounds, with long hair, and the other as white/Hispanic, about 190 pounds, with a ponytail and a face tattoo.
A MAN REPORTED that two men robbed him and allegedly tried to sexually assault his wife at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, at their home near Addison Street and Central Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that him and his wife drove home and opened the side garage door to see two men waiting in their gangway and one man pointed a handgun at them, demanded they get on the ground and took the man’s pendant necklace valued at $15,000, a bracelet with white stones valued at $10,000, a cellphone and his wallet containing various ID and credit cards and $500 in cash, as well as the woman’s cellphone, a satchel bag, a purse, a belt, two rings valued at $3,500 and $6,500 in cash, according to police.
The man reported that one of the men then took his wife into the garage, allegedly demanded she remove her clothing and then unsuccessfully tried to pull off her jeans before the men ran away, police said.
The man reported later that day that his daughter helped track their phones via GPS to an alley where they found their cellphones and credit cards discarded in trash bins, and that the men may have followed them home from a bar that night in a white Toyota sedan and a black sport utility vehicle, according to police.
The men were described as wearing black hooded sweatshirts with turtlenecks covering their faces.
A MAN WAS arrested on assault charged and for allegedly obstructing police as they searched for a man who pointed a gun at patrons at Bar 57 West, 5722 W. Higgins Ave., at about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 43-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man reported that a group of several men started making remarks at them and one man took out a firearm and hit it against the bar several times, and that they fled the bar and two of the men followed them as they ran through gangways and backyards to elude the men until they spotted officers in the area, according to police.
Officers saw two men fitting a description walking east on Higgins and north on Major Avenue, and one man allegedly rushed at officers and blocked their path as the armed man ran away, and the man was arrested after he was identified, police said.
The suspect was identified by police as Daniel Mendez, age 29, of the 5500 block of West Berteau Avenue. The armed man was described as white/Hispanic, about 6-0 and 180 pounds, and wearing a gray jacket or shirt.
A MAN WAS arrested after allegedly fighting with employees and bystanders at about 9 p.m. Friday, July 5, at a Jewel-Osco grocery store, 4729 N. Central Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Two male employees reported that they saw a man trying to leave the store without paying for items, and that when they approached the man he allegedly punched one of them in the face and then fought with second employee and a bystander before he fled south from the store and was later arrested, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Orest Koryakin, age 30, of the 5300 block of North Northwest Highway.
A MAN REPORTED that he was robbed at about 6:45 p.m. Thursday, July 4, in the 6100 block of West Belmont Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 43-year-old man reported that he exited a bus when two men approached from behind and one man ran up, took his cellphone valued at $200, pulled his arms behind his back and then took his wallet containing state and work ID cards, a debit card, a Ventra transit card and $18 in cash, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that a man punched him at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, July 6, on a CTA bus in the 5600 block of North Harlem Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 18-year-old man reported that a man boarded the bus without paying and then argued with him and punched him in the face before he left the bus, according to police.
The man was described as white, age 40 to 45, about 5-7 and 200 pounds, with brown hair, and wearing a black shirt, a gray hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants and orange gym shoes.
A VEHICLE was reported on fire at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6, in a parking lot in the 6000 block of West Addison Street, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
A 29-year-old woman reported that she was entering a business when a person came in and said that her 2008 Hyundai Elantra was on fire in the lot, and firefighters successfully extinguished the flames and said that no signs of accelerant were found and that the fire was likely electrical related, according to police.
AN EMPLOYEE of a Burger King restaurant, 4125 N. Milwaukee Ave., reported that she was the victim of a scam at about 7 p.m. Friday, July 5, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that she received a phone call from a person who pretended to be a corporate employee and demanded an $800 cash transfer through the Instagram application, and that with her manager’s approval they sent $500 to an account that was based in Mexico, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that his garage in the 5500 block of West Roscoe Street was burglarized and that his vehicle was stolen between 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, and 4 p.m. Saturday, July 6, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered that his overhead garage door was damaged and that his beige 2006 Mitsubishi pickup truck, a snow blower valued at $450, a lawnmower valued at $375, three saws valued at $260 and various hand tools valued at $1,500 were missing, according to police.
SEVERAL vehicles were reported stolen between 5:30 a.m. Monday, July 1, and 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 5, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Vehicles were reported stolen in the 3800 block of North Plainfield Avenue, the 4000 block of North Lavergne Avenue, the 5000 block of West Winona Street, the 5300 and 5400 blocks of North Lotus Avenue, the 5900 block of West Cullom Avenue, the 6100 block of North Nagle Avenue and the 8600 bock of West Berwyn Avenue, according to police.
SEVERAL car burglaries were reported between 6 p.m. Saturday, July 29, and 1 p.m. Sunday, July 7, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Vehicles were reportedly burglarized in the 4800 block of North McVicker Avenue, the 5200 block of North Osceola Avenue, the 5600 block of West Patterson Avenue, the 6000 block of North Naples Avenue, the 6100 block of West Waveland Avenue, the 6300 block of West Estes Avenue, the 7100 block of West Addison Street and the 7300 block of North Odell Avenue, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that a man stole five children’s’ bicycles at about 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, from the common area of an apartment building in the 8600 block of West Foster Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 32-year-old woman reported that she was watching her children play outside when a man in a white vehicle drove up, grabbed her son’s red bicycle and black bicycle and three pink bikes belonging to other children in the complex and placed them in the vehicle and sped away on Foster, according to police.
The man was described as white, age 60 to 70, 5-7 to 5-10, 220 to 240 pounds, bald, and wearing a white T-shirt and black pants.
A MAN REPORTED that his apartment in the 4700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue was burglarized between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered that his doorframe was damaged, and that his 1-year-old blue French bulldog and a metal safe containing a 9mm handgun, three ammunition magazines, his Firearm Owner’s ID card, his passport, other miscellaneous documents and an unknown amount of cash and jewelry were missing, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that an apartment in the 6200 block of West Devon Avenue was burglarized between 5 p.m. and 6:35 p.m. Monday, July 1, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The woman reported that when she returned home she discovered the building’s common side door and a basement apartment door were open, and when the male resident returned home he reported that miscellaneous clothing, a diamond wedding ring and other miscellaneous jewelry were missing, according to police.
A neighbor captured surveillance video footage showing a man forcing entry into the building and making multiple trips with items to a blue, four-door sedan that was parked on Devon, police said.
The man was described as black, age 25 to 35, about 6-0 and 200 pounds, with short black hair.
A COUPLE reported that their house in the 7300 block of West Everell Avenue was burglarized between 11:20 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, July 7, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man and woman reported that when they returned home they discovered that the front door deadbolt was forced open, and that a silver and diamond engagement ring valued at $5,200, a designer-brand watch valued at $2,000, and $50 in $2 bills were missing, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that his apartment in the 7100 block of North Caldwell Avenue was burglarized between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered pry marks to his doorknob and lock, and that he was unsure what was missing, according to police. Two neighbors reported that they heard knocking on their doors and one neighbor reported that she saw an unknown man leaving in a black or blue, early 1990’s-era Oldsmobile, police said.
A MAN REPORTED that his apartment in the 6700 block of North Central Avenue was burglarized between noon and 7 p.m. Monday, July 1, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that when he returned home he discovered the front door was open, and that a container with about $20,000 worth of small motor parts was missing, according to police.
A CONSTRUCTION worker reported that a construction site in the 6700 block of North Northwest Highway was burglarized between 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, and 7 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that he discovered someone untied the rope closing the chain link fence, and that four steel plates, a water meter, a laser, two filled gas cans, two hammer drills, two hand drills and two sledge hammers were stolen during an approximate four-week period, according to police.
