Man shoots reported robber in neck at 6 Corners lot

A man who has a conceal and carry permit pulled out his gun during a reported robbery at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday, June 30, in a city parking lot in the 4000 block of North Laporte Avenue and shot one of the three assailants in the neck, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 28-year-old man reported that three men approached him while he was in the lot to meet a friend and that they men announced a robbery, according to police. One of the men displayed a handgun, and a struggled then ensued between one of the assailants and the man, police said.
During the incident two of the assailants reportedly fled on foot after they saw the man reach for his own gun, police said. The 19-year-old man who was shot in the neck was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and he was described by police as a suspected gang member who does not live in the Portage Park area, police said.
There reportedly was an exchange of gunfire during the incident, as numerous bullet casings were recovered, police said. A parked vehicle was damaged from a gunshot, police said.
The man who shot the teen had at least one companion with him, and, based on witness reports, there may have been other people who fled the lot in addition to the two assailants, police said.
No charges have been filed in connection with the incident, police said.
Last year a suspected gang member was shot in the shoulder during a disturbance in the same block of Laporte.
