Mural on renovated newspaper shed to be unveiled at Nov. 16 ceremony
The unveiling of a community mural will be part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, for the renovated Gladstone Park newsstand near Milwaukee and Central avenues.
The project is being sponsored by the Gladstone Park Neighborhood Association, Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Side Unite and Jefferson Park Chamber of Commerce.
Plans call for temporary panels to be affixed on three sides of the approximately 60-year-old newspaper shed, featuring artwork from local residents and schools. The shed recently received several improvements, including a new door and insulation.
An account on gofundme.com, called “Stepping Up for Anthony,” has been set up to raise $10,000 for Anthony Johnson, a military veteran who sells newspapers at the newsstand on Sunday mornings. The funds will be used to help Johnson find housing.
“He currently sells newspapers to make ends meet, making about $120 per week. More times than not, Anthony sleeps outdoors,” the description on the fund-raising account states.
