Officers honored for saving kid’s life

Three police officers are being honored for saving the life of an 8-year-old boy who injured himself at about 6:50 p.m. Sunday, June 2, while climbing a fence in the 6300 block of West Addison Street.

Officers quickly applied a tourniquet to the boy’s arm after realizing that he was suffering arterial bleeding. Medical personnel later credited the officers’ actions for saving his life, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District commander Maureen Biggane.

At its July 18 meeting, the 16th District Advisory Committee voted to award officers Sergio Corona, Ravyn Morgan and Brendan Lyons with the district’s "Officer of the Month" award for June.

Also at the meeting, the committee presented the district’s recognition award for the month of May to officers Jason Ruiz and Mark Sharks.

The two officers were honored for their May 5 arrest of a suspect in connection with a report of gunshots in the 4200 block of North Melvina Avenue. The suspect reportedly had three spent shell casings on his lap and a gun after the officers pulled over his vehicle in the 5100 block of West Irving Park Road.

It was also announced at the meeting that the number of reported robberies in the district through July 14 was 45 compared to 75 during the same period in 2018, and the number of reported burglaries was 196 compared to 285 last year.

In addition, the number of driving under the influence arrests in the district this year through July 14 was 130 compared to 51 during the same period in 2018.
