Pool at Jefferson Park closes 2 weeks early this summer

The outdoor pool at Jefferson Memorial Park, 4822 N. Long Ave., has closed two weeks earlier than usual this summer due to a lifeguard shortage in the Chicago Park District.
The pool’s last day of operation was Sunday, Aug. 19, instead of its usual closing date of Labor Day. It was one of nine pools to shut down early, including pools at the following North Region parks: Avondale at 3516 W. School St. and Wrightwood at 2534 N. Greenview Ave.
“Our first priority is to ensure the safety and security of the hundreds of visitors and residents who frequent our pools. Due to low staff level, the Chicago Park District has had to consolidate the number of outdoor pools available to park patrons. The same process was done 3 years ago.
“After discussing the matter with elected officials, a decision was made to close nine park pools due to low usage,” the park district said in a statement.
Many of the lifeguards are returning to school before Labor Day, said park district spokeswoman Irene Tostado.
Users of the Jefferson Park pool are encouraged to swim at Norwood Park, 5801 N. Natoma Ave., Portage Park, 4100 N. Long Ave., and Gompers Park, 4222 W. Foster Ave., according to Tostado. The outdoor pools at these three parks will be open through Monday, Sept. 3, she said.
