Six Corners to host County Fair with urban twist in September

by BRIAN NADIG

The inaugural “County Fair Chicago” will be coming to the Six Corners shopping district at Milwaukee Avenue, Cicero Avenue and Irving Park Road on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9.

“The idea is to create a small fair based on the traditional model of a county fair with an urban twist,” said Six Corners Association executive director Kelli Wefenstette. “There is no other county fair in Cook County. We are one of two or three counties (in Illinois) that don’t have a fair.”

The fair will be held outdoors on a private lot in the commercial district and will open both days at noon. Admission is $10, and proceeds will benefit the association’s beautification efforts and local charities.

The fair will include blue-ribbon competitions in the following categories, art, food and drink, garden and community philanthropy. In addition, fair attendees will be able to learn a new craft or skill from a variety of artisans leading demonstrations.

Also featured will be a midway with locally made cuisine for sale, and country, bluegrass and rockabilly bands will be performing on the “Grandstand.” A barn dance on Saturday night also is planned.

The weekend of the fair will be a busy one for festivals on the Far Northwest Side. The Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce’s “Throwback Music Fest” will be held that weekend at Milwaukee and Elston avenues, and while details have not been announced, the “Chicago Fringe Festival” is usually held the same weekend.

Vendor and sponsorship information for the county fair is available at sixcorners.com.
