Trump wins 41st Ward on Chicago’s NW Side — first ward in city to do so

by BRIAN MADIG
The 41st Ward on Chicago’s Far Northwest Side has become the first ward in Chicago where a majority voted for Donald Trump during one of his three presidential runs.
Alderman Anthony Napolitano (41s) said that that he “absolutely” voted for Trump and that he is not surprised by the outcome in his ward, where Trump received about 52.5 percent of the vote.
“People (in the 41st Ward) don’t vote for the party. They vote for the person,” said Napolitano, who has described himself an independent with some conservative leanings. “A lot of people just reflected back to (Trump’s) first term” and felt the country was on a better path at that time compared to the past 4 years.
Napolitano said that inflation, immigration and “out of control crime” are among the top concerns for ward residents.
“The job of the police officer has been so demonized by the woke-socialist agenda,” said Napolitano, who was once a police officer himself and whose ward is known for having a significant number of first responders living there. The ward includes the Edison Park, Norwood Park and Oriole Park neighborhoods.
Napolitano added that he hopes Trump’s victory and his overall better performance this election in Chicago and Illinois will help bring more common sense and fiscal responsibility to City Council.
“We are going down a terrible path, (and) the mayor is in no position to be playing politics right now,” he said, adding that opposition to the $300 million property tax hike proposal from the Johnson administration is growing. The mayor reportedly is scaling back his tax hike plan.
Napolitano said that he also would like to see the funding for ShotSpotter return.
Mayor Brandon Johnson opposed the gunshot detection program that had been operating in some neighborhoods until earlier this year. The mayor ended the contract for ShotSpotter.
The neighboring 38th Ward also had a strong showing for Trump, where he received 45.12 present of the vote.
“I’m very disappointed I wasn’t second,” Alderman Nicholas Sposato (38th) said of his ward’s showing for Trump. Sposato, a former Democratic committeeman, voted for Trump.
In addition to the 41st Ward, both the 13th and 50th wards had higher percentages, 47.72 and 46.16 respectively, for Trump compared to Sposato’s ward. Sposato has arguably been Trump’s most vocal supporter in the council.
Trump came close to winning the 41st Ward in 2020, but his lead evaporated as the late-arriving mail-in ballots were being counted, according to Napolitano.
