Winona House Fire

A man was hospitalized with serious burns after his home in the 5000 block of West Winona Avenue caught fire at about 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Department spokesman Larry Langford said that the fire started at the rear of the two-story wood-frame house and that the building suffered extensive damage, with most of the roof burned. Langford said that the injured man, described as in his 50s, was attempting to reenter the burning home when an off-duty firefighter prevented him from going back in and that much of his clothing was burned.

Langford said that the man was admitted to Loyola Medical Center in serious to critical condition with burns over less than 20 percent of his body.

Firefighters also removed “about a dozen” dogs from the home, and paramedics used oxygen masks designed for animals to revive 10 of the animals, Langford said. He said that he did not know the exact number of animals brought out of the home and that the department is investigating the cause of the fire.

The fire also jumped to a second house located to the east, which suffered damage to the second floor, Langford said. He said that four engines and four trucks responded to the fire, which was struck at about 4:15 p.m.
