16th (Jefferson Park) Police District honors teens for assistance in road-rage investigation

The 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District Advisory Committee at its Jan. 16 meeting honored three high school students who assisted police in the arrest of a man who reportedly flashed a gun during an apparent road-rage incident.
The committee and police officials praised the students for remaining calm during the incident and then providing officers with the details, including a description of the suspect and a license plate number, that a week later led to an arrest. One officer said that the students cooperated and followed up with the investigation in a manner better than most adults do.
“You didn’t panic, and police were able to make a very good arrest,” committee chairman Thomas Bucaro said.
On Oct. 10 a 16-year-old female driver and two occupants, a male and a female, were traveling south in the 3200 block of North Cumberland Avenue when another vehicle cut them off and came to an abrupt stop, according to police. The driver reportedly then exited his vehicle, displaying a black handgun and yelling profanities before driving off.
They later identified the suspect in a photo lineup, police said. The 39-year-old man was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with use of a deadly weapon and reckless driving, police said.
“These young citizens were extremely courageous and demonstrated great maturity. The Chicago Police Department would like to commend you for your bravery and thank you for your community involvement,” states a “certificate of recognition” which district commander Robert Vanna gave to each student. Their names are not being released at the request of a parent.
It also was reported that the teens have been asked to serve on the district’s peer jury program, which efforts are being made to resurrect. The panel has not met in about 5 years.
Under the program a panel of teens decide on punishment, such as community service or a letter of apology, for juveniles who have admitted guilt in minor offenses.
The committee also awarded its “officer of the month award” to officers Iris Davila and Brian Torres for their Dec. 29 arrest of a male suspect in a domestic battery incident at a Portage Park area home.
It also was reported that relatives of a 19-year-old murder victim have expressed gratitude that the district’s court advocates attend court hearings in support of the victim’s family. She was fatally shot while leaving an unlicensed social club in Jefferson Park in 2021, and a 27-year-old man was later charged with her murder. The case is pending.
