7-Eleven gas station on Milwaukee planned

by BRIAN NADIG

A 7-Eleven gas station and convenience store would replace the existing gas station at 6367 N. Milwaukee Ave. under a proposal which the Zoning Board of Appeals is expected to consider later this year.

The proposal calls for construction of an approximately 2,500-square-foot convenience store along the south end of the parcel, which is located at the intersection of Milwaukee, Devon and Nagle avenues. There also would be nine parking spaces in front of the store, while new gas pumps would be installed on the northern half of the site.

In addition, the existing driveway on Nagle would be eliminated, while the curb cut on Milwaukee would be made smaller in an effort to improve traffic flow and safety, according to Alderman Margaret Laurino’s office. New landscaping and fencing also are planned.

In the past 25 years the gas station has operated as an Amoco, a Gas Depot and, most recently, a Sunoco. A developer for the 7-Eleven project reportedly is planning to purchase the property.

The site’s redevelopment would require a special use permit for the establishment of a new gas station from the zoning board, said Laurino spokesman Manuel Galvan.

The planned 7-Eleven store would not sell liquor due to a city ordinance that prohibits the sale of liquor at gas stations.

Earlier this year a proposal to build a 7-Eleven gas station at Montrose and Austin avenues failed to materialize.
