Ald. Nugent announces public art & other grants for Gladstone Park, Mayfair, Forest Glen, North Park

by BRIAN NADIG
Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th) has announced that at least $70,000 in grants is being designated for a variety of beautification and other initiatives in Gladstone Park, Mayfair, Forest Glen and other neighborhoods in the 39th Ward on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
The grants are being awarded to six nonprofit/community groups from the estate of Donna Caroline King, who passed away in 2024 and was a co-founder of TMK Development Ltd.
Nugent made a formal announcement regarding the “39th Ward Community Impact” program at a July 9 event at North Park University. “Each of these organizations represents the very best of the 39th Ward. Neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers giving their time and talent, and a commitment to building a community that uplifts everyone,” Nugent said, adding that King’s legacy will live on in these projects.
The grants include $5,000 to the Mayfair Park Advisory Council for a garden honoring longtime community volunteer Wally Eliason that will be installed at Mayfair Park, 4550 W. Sunnyside Ave., and $5,000 to the Gladstone Park Neighborhood Association for the maintenance and beautification of Chopin Plaza, a large traffic island at Milwaukee and Elston avenues that includes flagpoles and benches. Pavement restoration and landscaping will be part of the plaza improvements.
In addition, $15,000 is being allocated toward an art project in Forest Glen, according to the Forest Glen Community Club’s newsletter. A mural at the expressway viaduct at Forest Glen and Lansing avenues reportedly is being considered.
Other recipients are Northside Learning Center for the construction of wheelchair-accessible raised garden beds in the school’s greenhouse, North Park Community Market (on the grounds of Peterson School) for its continued efforts to offer fresh food and community activities, and Gompers Park Athletic Association for the installation of flood mitigation infrastructure at ball fields used by the group. Each of these groups is receiving $15,000.
“Donna King was a remarkable person who cared deeply about people and the communities around her, said Tony Licata, attorney for the estate. “She and her husband Terry believed in building things that last. Donna was kind, generous and never forgot the importance of giving back. It’s a privilege to honor her legacy by supporting grassroots efforts that make a tangible difference in people’s lives, and I thank Alderman Nugent for her collaboration in supporting these 39th Ward organizations.”
