Armed thieves in Jefferson Park, gunshots in Mayfair, altercation at Harlem CTA stop reported

Recently reported crimes on the Far Northwest Side include armed catalytic converter thieves in Jefferson Park, gunshots in Mayfair and an altercation at a CTA Blue Line stop in the Norwood Park area, according to Chicago police.

A man reported that another man pointed a gun at him when he went outside to start his vehicle at about 4 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in the 4800 block of West Ainslie Street, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.

The gunmen was one of three people who were standing in the street and are suspected of trying to steal a catalytic converter on the block, according to police. The gunman told the man not to get any closer, and the three men fled in a black sport utility vehicle, police said.

The three men were described as age 20 to 30, with two of them also being described as Black/Hispanic, police said.

Multiple gunshots were reported at about 6 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the 5000 block of North Tripp Avenue in the 17th (Albany Park) Police District, according to a public safety announcement posted by Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th) on her ward Facebook page. Two parked vehicles were damaged, and police recovered shell casings, the post said. Police are asking for any surveillance footage of the incident to be submitted to the district.

A man reportedly was taken into custody at about 3 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, following an incident at the Blue Line stop at 5500 N. Harlem Ave. in which at least one individual was pushed or dragged down onto the tracks, police said.

Preliminary reports indicated that a man and a woman were pushed onto the tracks, while a later report from police said that only a woman was forced onto the tracks. The incident remains under investigation, police said.

No life-threatening injuries were reported, reported.

A description of the reported assailant was sent over police radio, and a suspect was taken into custody near Balmoral and Mont Clare avenues, police said. Charges are pending, police said.
