Arrest made in shooting

A man has been charged in connection with the shooting of a 17-year-old teenager that occurred at about 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the parking lot of TCF Bank, 4930 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.

The suspect was identified by police as William Pacheco, age 18, of the 3100 block of North Springfield Avenue. Pacheco was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery and discharge of a weapon, one felony count of possession of cannabis between 100 of 500 grams, one felony count of possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number and one misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Officers who responded to a report of a person shot in the 5500 block of West Higgins Avenue discovered the teen, who had been shot in the left side of the head, according to police. The teen was admitted to Lutheran General Hospital, and his condition was stable, police said.

A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old teen reported that they were with the 17-year-old who was shot at an automated teller machine at the bank and that a blue minivan stopped on Milwaukee Avenue and a man got out of the van, shouted at them and fired a gun, according to police. The two reported that they ran away and that the 17-year-old collapsed in a yard on Higgins, police said.

The van was driven by woman, and it had two other occupants, according to police.

16th District commander William Looney said that the incident was captured on several cameras in the area and that a suspect was placed into custody "fairly quickly." Looney said that the shooting most likely stemmed from previous incidents, but he would not say whether the shooting was gang- or drug-related.
