Bam Bam reunited with owner after being dropped off at 16th (Jefferson Park) Police Station

by BRIAN NADIG

A 14-year-old dachshund named Bam Bam has been reunited with his legally blind owner after two individuals dropped the missing dog off Tuesday evening, Aug. 19, at the 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District Station, 5151 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Bam Bam was reported to be in good health, but little additional information about his return is known at this time.
A man and a woman reportedly told officers that they found the dog in the 5600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and left the station without providing their names.

The dog had been reported stolen from a backyard on June 5 in Logan Square, and a $5,000 reward was being offered. News of the missing dog sparked a lot of interest on social media.

Shortly after the dog was left at he station, officers sent a picture of the dog to Garrido Stray Rescue Foundation co-founder John Garrido, who immediately posted a picture on the group’s Facebook page, seeking help in locating his owner. The volunteer foundation has a stray-hold agreement with Chicago Animal Care and Control, typically receiving 80 to 100 found dogs a year that would have otherwise been sent to CACC, Garrido said.

“I didn’t realize it was Bam Bam … immediately,” Garrido said, adding that he had been familiar with the publicity surrounding Bam Bam’s disappearance. “They then sent me the reward flier, (and) holy moly this is Bam Bam I said.”
Bam Bam has a microchip, whose scanning led officers to a phone number for the owner, Garrido said. The officers initially got the owner’s answering machine and left a message, but an online search of the phone number led them to the reward flier, he said.

The incident stresses the importance of microchipping pets, said Garrido, a former Chicago police lieutenant.

The foundation was formally established in 2017 by John and Anna Garrido. It was reported in 2023 that the foundation has nearly a 90-percent success rate in reuniting found dogs with their owners.
