Burglars steal ATMs from two restaurants, bars in Jefferson Park area on Chicago’s NW Side

by BRIAN NADIG
ATM cash stations were stolen during burglaries at two Northwest Side businesses between 3:30 and 4 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thieves smashed a front window of the Corral House Bar and Grill, 5527 N. Milwaukee Ave., and dragged out the ATM, placing it in a vehicle before fleeing, according to police.
An ATM also was reported stolen at the Sixpenny Bit, 5800 W. Montrose Ave., police said.
The thieves were wearing masks and black clothing, and there were three or four of them, police said.
There also was a report of an attempt to pry open a door at Vaughan’s Pub and Grill, 5485 N. Northwest Hwy., but it is not clear if entry was gained, police said.
The 16th District is reminding businesses to have ATMs firmly secured to the floor and to consider installing other barriers around their base to help deter thieves, who in some instances have successfully removed ATMs even when they are bolted down.
Despite the recent incidents, reported commercial and residential burglaries in the 16th District through Feb. 15 were down 55 percent this year when compared to the same period in 2025, with 17 reported this year compared to 39 last year, according to police.
Last month two stolen vehicles were used as part of a smash-and-grab burglary at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Randee’s Foods and Liquors, 4319-21 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to police.
One of the cars was used to smash into the storefront, while the five burglars later fled in a waiting Dodge Durango, which also had been reported stolen, according to police. One of the vehicles had been stolen only a minute or two prior to the burglary.
The 16th District has experienced an increase in car thefts in recent weeks, with 16 stolen Feb. 9-15, compared to four during the same period last year.
Thieves have been reprogramming key fobs, allowing them to enter the vehicle and drive away.
The district is running missions to combat the recent series of car thefts and break-ins, which have included the theft of air bags from Honda Civics. The bags are then being resold.
