Demolition of White Eagle in Niles could happen in January

by BRIAN NADIG
The demolition of the White Eagle banquet hall, 6839 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles, could start as early as mid-January if the ongoing asbestos removal goes well, according to the village.
A construction fence recently went up around the site, and a demolition permit is pending.
In addition, the project’s developer, Noah Properties, is being asked by the village to possibly include a portion of the banquet hall facade into the new development.
The development will consist of a series of 10 buildings measuring three to six stories tall, and a restaurant, pool, playground and public art will be included in the complex. A total of 330 apartments and 24 townhouses are planned.
The banquet business was founded in Chicago by a member of the Przybylo family in the 1940s and relocated to Niles in the mid-1960s. The building included a deli and a convention center, and in 2015 Victoria Venues acquired the business.
“For over 60 years the White Eagle has been an iconic gathering place for the Polish community of Niles and surrounding Chicago suburbs.
“The White Eagle is now permanently closed. Whether you joined us for a holiday brunch, stopped by to pick up some of our famous mushroom-barely soup or celebrated a milestone event here, we’d like to thank you for being part of our story,” Victoria Venues posted on its website.
The following recipe for the mushroom-barely soup was posted on Victoria’s website:

The White Eagle also hosted numerous funeral luncheons, as a cemetery is located across from the site. It also hosted several political events for Chicago area and national politicians.
The Niles Village Board of Trustees on Sept. 23 unanimously approved a special use for a planned unit development authorizing the redevelopment of site, which includes an adjacent office building.
Also in the area, a new 215 apartment complex is planned for the Touhy-Harlem intersection and 180 units are being built at 6633 N. Milwaukee Ave. Noah Properties also is developing the 6633 N. Milwaukee project.
