Gun-related arrests reported in 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District, including teens reportedly bending street signs

by BRIAN NADIG

A group of four teens who reportedly possessed a gun and narcotics and were bending street signs and two suspected burglars were among the recent arrests in the 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District.

The teens, ages 16 and 17, were arrested after officers responded to a report of street signs being bent at about 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, near Grace Street and Newland Avenue in the Dunning area, according to police.

Bent street signs can be a sign of gang activity, but it is not clear if the vandalism was gang-related, and the incident remains under investigation, police said.

One of the teens reportedly possessed a loaded ghost gun with a laser and extended magazine, and some of them also had suspected narcotics, police said.

Also in the district near Palatine and Oketo avenues in Edison Park, two men who reportedly were checking the door handles of parked vehicles were arrested and are being investigated for possible links to car break-ins, including in nearby suburbs, police said. One of the suspects reportedly had a gun, and a reported stolen vehicle was recovered, police said.

In addition, a 20-year-old man was charged with two felony counts of a hate crime and one felony count of aggravated battery in connection with a July 8 incident which a 42-year-old woman was stabbed in the 5700 block of West Addison Street in the Portage Park area, according to Chicago police.

A racial slur allegedly was used before the woman was attacked, police said.

Officers and detectives were able to identify the suspect during the investigation, and the suspect was arrested in Schiller Park on July 30, police said. The suspect was identified by police as Andres Stathoulopoulos, of the 4100 block of North Central Avenue, according to police.
