Gunfire erupts in separate shootings in Portage Park, Dunning neighborhoods over weekend

Large amount of gunfire was reported in separate incidents over the weekend in Portage Park and Dunning neighborhoods on the Northwest Side.

In one incident, a witness reported that three men fired approximately 30 shots at about 4:05 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at a vehicle parked in an alley of the 4800 block of West Cornelia Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.

The witness reported that surveillance footage showed the driver of a red Infiniti sedan parked in the alley and three men exited the vehicle and fired shots at the parked vehicle, according to police.

Officers recovered 30 spent shell casings from the alley and no injuries were reported, according to police.

The shooters were described as 5-10, and wearing black hooded sweatshirts and black pants.

Two other reported incidents in Dunning appear to be related.

Three vehicles and a home were damaged after shots were fired in the 7300 block of West Addison Street at about 3:50 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, according to police.

A resident reported that he was in his backyard when a vehicle drove through the alley, circled around the front of his home and fired several shots, according to police. Officers saw the home had visible damage to the front windows and living room walls, police said.

A resident from a neighboring home reported hearing shots fired, looked outside and saw a light-colored sedan fleeing east on Addison, according to police. Officers saw that three parked vehicles had visible damage to the driver’s side windows and they recovered three fired bullets at the scene, police said.

A detailed description of the shooter or shooters was not provided, according to police.

Five vehicles and two homes were damaged after shots were fired in the 7300 block of West Addison and in the 3500 block of North Odell Avenue at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, according to police.

Witnesses reported that occupants of a silver Honda sedan with tinted windows and a silver BMW fired multiple shots at each other, according to police.

A resident of the 7300 block of Addison reported that the silver Honda sedan drove east on Addison, turned south on to Odell and drove through the alley when he heard several shots fired, police said. The resident reported that he saw the same vehicle as the driver circled the block, with an occupant holding a handgun out of the passenger side window, pointing at a home that had been shot the night before, according to police.

Officers noted that the home had damage to the front window, the front door and siding on the front of the home, police said. Another resident provided surveillance footage that showed the silver Honda turned on to Odell when several more shots were fired, according to police.

Officers responded to a call of criminal damage to a vehicle in the 3500 block of Odell and noted that three parked vehicles were damaged by bullets and there was also a bullet hole in the window of a home, police said.

Officers recovered a total of 21 spent rifle casings and 3 spent 9-millimeter shell casings from the 3500 blocks of North Odell and North Oketo avenues and from the 7300 block of West Addison Street, according to police.
