Improvements for Eugene Field, Mayfair parks & Palmer, Solomon schools on 39th Ward ballot

by CYRYL JAKUBOWSKI
Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th) announced residents age 14 and older can vote on proposed participatory budget projects through Aug. 15, including on better restrooms at Mayfair Park, resurfacing the basketball court at Eugene Field Park, improvements at Palmer and Solomon schools and other street-related projects.
People can vote on how to spend $500,000 of the $1.5 million in public budget funds, also known as “menu” money.
People can find a link to vote and information about each project at bit.ly/PBBallot39.
Some of the proposed projects include improving restroom at Mayfair Park, 4550 W. Sunnyside Ave., because they “break constantly” and get “backed up and cannot support day camp or event in the neighborhood for $200,000, and gates enclosing the playground at North Mayfair Park for $20,000 to “take toddlers to who might be at risk of running out into the road,” according to the alderman’s newsletter.
Also, new tree gates for 50 trees and tree pits along 3200-3400 West Bryn Mawr Avenue for $180,000; and resurfacing the basketball court at Eugene Field Park for $100,000.
Also, adding a left turn arrow signal at the intersection of Pulaski Road and Elston Avenue for $150,000; replacing the driveway entrance in the parking lot at Little Gompers Park next to the tennis courts for $100,000; and repaving Balmoral between Cicero and Laporte avenues for $80,000.
Other project include new crosswalks and pedestrian crossing signs at Elston and Kildare or Elston and Kiona for $80,000; a crosswalk bump out at North Forest Glen Avenue and Catalpa Avenue for $75,000; and pedestrian safety measures at the entrance to Peterson Park at Central Park and Ardmore avenues for $60,000.
Improvements at schools include a community gathering spot at Solomon School for $35,000 and an outdoor education space at Palmer School for $30,000.
