A new store featuring a curated selection of vintage clothing from the 1930s through the 1980s along with jewelry, purses and other items recently opened at 4948 W. Irving Park Road in the Six Corners retail district.

“My hobby is just going to … flea markets and estate sales on the weekends,” Little Sweetpea’s Vintage store owner Denise Davidson said. “I’ve been collecting for at least 25 years.” She also visits antique malls in Wisconsin and Iowa.

The clothing sold at Davidson’s vintage store has been “laundered, dry cleaned,” so items are ready to wear immediately, she said.

Older clothes are usually well made, “with great fabrics,” giving them a long life and allowing for them to be resold, Davidson said.

Little Sweetpea’s is Davidson’s first brick and mortar location, but she has sold items from her collection at flea markets. Having a shop should be easier because it won’t involve packing up the items to be sold each weekend and traveling to a market, she said.

Portage Park Chamber of Commerce executive director Michael Giordano recruited Davidson to the Six Corners district as part of a storefront activation grant program that the chamber is administering on behalf of the city.

Davidson said that the chamber, her landlord and area residents have been very welcoming and helpful.

“Everyone is so nice in Portage Park.”

The grant covers rent and some over expenses for a year. The grant will allow sales income from the first year to be put back into the business in preparation for the following year when grant won’t be available, said Davidson, who also works as a professor.

Current hours are from noon to 4 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but customers are encouraged to check the store’s Instagram page for updates and more information.

On Sept. 8, the store extended its hours after a lot of “happy Bears fans” stopped by after the team’s victory, Davidson said.

The chamber is planning to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the store’s grand opening.
