Little Warsaw” honorary street dedication set for Labor Day at Milwaukee-Lawrence & Other Jeff Park Happenings

Jefferson Park Happenings …

HONORARY STREET DEDICATION on LABOR DAY
Alderman John Arena (45th) and State Representative Robert Martwick (D-19) will hold an honorary street dedication ceremony in honor of the area’s Polish heritage at noon Monday, Sept. 1, at the intersection of Milwaukee and Lawrence avenues.
Lawrence Avenue between Milwaukee Avenue and Avondale Avenue will be “Warsaw Chicago Sister Cities Way” and Milwaukee between Giddings Street and Lawrence will be “Chicago’s Little Warsaw Way.”
Lawrence between Long Avenue and Milwaukee will be “Irena Sendler Way,” and Milwaukee between Lawrence and Higgins Avenue will be “Jan Karski Way.” Sendler was a Polish social worker who saved 2,500 Jewish children from extermination during World War II, and Karski was among the first to provide information about the Holocaust to Allied leaders.
The dedication ceremony is being held in conjunction with the annual “Taste of Polonia” festival at the Copernicus Center, 5216 W. Lawrence Ave. The festival runs Friday, Aug. 29, to Monday, Sept. 1. The center’s “Solidarity Tower” is a replica of the clock tower that adorns the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland.
The “Little Warsaw” in Jefferson Park logo was designed by graphics artist Jill Arena.

SEPT. 4 COMMUNITY MEETING on ‘PEDESTRIAN STREET”
Alderman John Arena (45th) will hold a community meeting on a proposed “pedestrian street” zoning designation for the Milwaukee-Lawrence business district at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Jefferson Park Library, 5363 W. Lawrence Ave.
The designation, which is intended to preserve the area’s pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, prohibits new curb cuts and drive-through facilities. It would take effect along Milwaukee Avenue between Giddings Street and Higgins Avenue and on Lawrence Avenue between Long Avenue and Laramie Avenue.
For more information, call the ward office at 773-286-4545.

9/11 MEMORIAL CEREMONY at MILWAUKEE/HIGGINS
The Jefferson Park Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual memorial ceremony for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the war memorial monument at Milwaukee and Higgins avenues.
Students from the Our Lady of Victory School will lead the “Pledge of Allegiance” and sing patriotic songs, and Larry Zimmerman of Nadig Newspapers will play “Taps” on the bugle. Veterans groups and local police and fire officials have been invited to the ceremony.
After the ceremony, the chamber will host a luncheon meeting at the Gale Street Inn, 4914 N. Milwaukee Ave. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.
Reservations for the lunch can be made by calling chamber executive director Anne Kamykowski at 773-736-6697.
