Local Crime from 16th District 2-14-18
A TEENAGER was arrested for allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in the 4400 block of North Mulligan Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
An off-duty police officer said that he returned to his 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee he left running and saw a male inside the vehicle who exited after he confronted him, and that a second male approached and placed his hand in his pocket as the first male said "smoke him," and that the two males fled in opposite directions, according to police.
Officers searched the area and found footprints in the snow leading to a crawlspace in a residence in the 4400 block of North Mobile Avenue, where a male was found and arrested at about 6:45 a.m. after a resident confirmed he was trespassing and the off-duty officer identified the male, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as a 15-year-old male. The other male was described as wearing a black hooded jacket with insignia.
TWO TOW truck drivers reported that they were attacked and that their tow truck was damaged as they were about to tow a vehicle at about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the 5500 block of North Central Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The men, age 69 and 20, reported that they were contracted by the city to remove vehicles in designated snow routes and locked a white GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle on the truck flatbed when a man approached, opened the driver’s door of the truck, picked up the 69-year-old and threw him to the ground, according to police. The men reported that the man then went to the rear of the truck and punched the 20-year-old, and that the man then entered the flatbed truck and drove the Yukon off while striking the rear roll bar and yellow safety light bar of the truck with damages estimated at about $15,000, according to police. The 69-year-old was treated at Community First Medical Center, police said.
The man was described as black, about age 29 and approximately 6-0 and 260 pounds.
A MAN WAS found deceased at the Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant, 4867 N. Milwaukee Ave., at about 9:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
An employee reported that he called 911 to check on the well being of an unresponsive man, and the man was transported to Community First Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at about 10:15 p.m., according to police. A cause of death is pending, police said.
The man was identified by police as Tibor Baricz, age 35, of the 5100 block of North Lotus Avenue.
A VEHICLE was set on fire at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the 5500 block of West Warwick Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officers discovered a Hyundai sedan engulfed in flames, and fire department personnel were able to extinguish the blaze but unable to determine the cause of fire at the time of the report, and the flames also damaged a Nissan sedan parked in front of the Hyundai, according to police.
A VEHICLE was set on fire at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the 3300 block of North Laramie Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Officers reported that an Infiniti hatchback was found ablaze while parked in a private gated lot, and that fire department personnel were able to extinguish the flame but unable to determine the cause of fire at the time of the report, according to police.
SEVERAL VEHICLES were reported stolen between Feb. 4 and 11, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Thefts were reported in the 6600 block of North Schreiber Avenue, the 5100 block of West Dakin Street, the 4000 block of North Leamington Avenue, the 6300 and 4900 blocks of West School Street, the parking lot of Walgreens, 4343 N. Central Ave., and the parking lot of Rabbit’s Bar and Grill, 4945 W. Foster Ave, according to police.
Thefts were also reported in the 4800 block of North Newcastle Avenue, the 5300 block of West Windsor Avenue, the 4400 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, the 5300 block of West Foster Avenue, the parking lot of Hagen’s Fish Market, 5635 W. Montrose Ave., and the parking lot of Dora’s Cleaners, 3245 N. Harlem Ave., according to police.
AN EMPLOYEE of Di’s Den, 5100 W. Irving Park Road, reported that the business was burglarized between 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, and 8:10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that when she returned to the business she discovered that the rear door had been forced open, the alarm system had been ripped off the wall, the phone lines were cut from the rear of the building, the wiring to the sensors above the front and rear doors were cut and the camera digital video recording system was missing, and that a night drop box, receipts for about $2,400 in transactions and a wall mounted automated teller machine valued at $2,500 containing about $2,300 in cash were missing, according to police.
An employee of a bus and limousine rental service at 5320 W. Lawrence Ave., reported that numerous vehicles were burglarized while parked in a lot between 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 and 4 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The employee reported that he discovered doors of four buses and a touring car were broken, that the vehicles’ dashboards were damaged, and that Jensen Audio systems valued at about $1,000 were missing from each vehicle, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that his car was damaged by gunshots at about 2 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the 3300 block of North Linder Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 18-year-old man reported that his parents, age 52 and 54, heard shots fired at about 2 a.m., and that the next morning he discovered bullet holes in the rear door and the inner frame of the 2013 Infiniti sedan after snow melted to reveal the damage, according to police.
THE OWNER of John’s Import Foods, 5515 N. Northwest Hwy., reported that the business was burglarized between 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11 and 8:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The owner reported that when he returned to the business he discovered the overhead rear door was forced open with two bolt cutters left inside the door, that two inner doors were damaged with doorknobs removed, and that the store office and file cabinets were ransacked, but he was unsure if anything was missing at the time of the report, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that the garage of her home in the 3200 block of North Ozark Avenue was burglarized between 1:20 and 5 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 48-year-old woman reported that her husband discovered that the rear garage entry door had been opened and that miscellaneous tools, a snow blower and an electric wiring supply system valued at a total of $3,800 were missing, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that the garage of his home in the 6100 block of West Newport Avenue was burglarized between 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 and 9:20 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The 73-year-old man reported that he discovered that the side door lock had been broken, and that a toolbox, a snow blower, laundry detergent, a stepladder, an air compressor, a leaf blower and a pressure washer valued at a total of about $2,000 were missing, according to police.
