Look back at Edgebrook Library’s grand opening sparks memories for this now Northwest Side school principal

Taft High School principal Ryan Glowacz did a double take recently reading a Nadig Newspapers article about the Edgebrook Library, 5331 W. Devon Ave.

He was there on Aug. 24, 2000, when the library was dedicated, not as principal, but as a Wildwood School student.

“Our principal Ms. Savoy walked my sixth grade class over there,” Glowacz recently recalled. “I was so impressed that a principal would take the day to do that. She led the entire field trip. That definitely left a mark on me.” It was an 80+ degree sunny day, perfect for a 30 minute walk from the school to the library.

Glowacz was surprised to see himself in one of the dedication day pictures. He’s sitting at a “state-of-the-art” computer at the new library, and he suspects he’s also in some larger crowd photos. Read the article here.

In 2024, Glowacz was named the principal of Taft High School. After graduating from Wildwood, he attended Taft, where he graduated in 2006.

The library will hold its 25th anniversary celebration from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, featuring food, music, a bounce house and a scavenger hunt.

The 2000 dedication ceremony featured many elected officials, including then-Mayor Richard Daley.

“That is the thing I remember most, the press conference (and) how red Daley’s face was, and the questions having nothing to do with the opening of the library,” Glowacz said.

If Mayor Brandon Johnson were to attend this weekend’s festivities at the Edgebrook Library, perhaps another area student — and maybe a future principal — would be left with a similar impression.
