Man shot on Irving Park, restaurant robbery reported

A 30-year-old man was shot in the back and leg while driving at about 3:40 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, in the 3600 block of West Irving Park Road, and in another incident a fast-food restaurant was robbed at gunpoint at about 12:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in the 4800 block of North Pulaski Road, according to the Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs.
In the first crime, the man reported that he was driving when a dark-colored vehicle drove up alongside his vehicle and an occupant shot at his car and injured him, according to police. The man was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital, police said.
Meanwhile, a man wearing a white face mask, a black jacket and surgical gloves displayed a possible rifle or a shotgun and took an undisclosed amount of cash from a cashier at the restaurant and then fled on foot, police said.
This year through Dec. 6 in the 17th (Albany Park) Police District, there have been 213 reported robberies, up from 153 during the same period in 2019, representing a 39-percent increase. There also have been 61 shooting incidents compared to 28 during the same period in 2019.
Last week, in the 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District, officers discovered a man shot several times in the rear passenger seat of a Chevrolet Impala which was parked the wrong way on a one-way street and which had a stolen temporary license plate at about 5:10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in the 5100 block of West Melrose Street, according to police. Officer were responding to a call of shots fired in the 5100 block of West Belmont Avenue, police said. An ambulance arrived, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
It is the ninth reported homicide in the district this year. In 2019 the district experienced 10 homicides, compared to two or three in most recent years.
Another shooting last week was reported at about 5 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in the 6300 block of West Higgins Avenue in which a man was shot while riding as a passenger in a vehicle, police said.
In all, at least four people were shot in the district during a 7-day period, Nov.30 to Dec. 6, and through Nov. 29 there were 19 shooting incidents this year reported in the district compared to 11 during the same period in 2019.
