Officer wounds suspect

A Chicago police sergeant shot a Northwest Side man after the man allegedly rammed a squad car in an attempt to flee and tried to strike the officer with his car in an incident that occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in the 5600 block of West Roscoe Street, according to the Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs.

The suspect was identified by police as Angel Torres, age 44, of the 2900 block of North Narragansett Ave. He was charged on Sept. 21 with one felony count of residential burglary, one felony count of aggravated assault and one felony count of armed violence though the use of a vehicle, police said.

Officers from the 25th (Grand Central) Police District saw a vehicle that matched the description of a car that was used in a burglary that was reported in the 6100 block of West Belmont Avenue, according to police. Two responding sergeants chased the 2003 Buick Rendezvous and attempted to stop it in the 5600 block of West Roscoe Street, and when one of the officers got out of the squad car, the man put his car in reverse and struck the squad car, police said.

The sergeant approached the vehicle on foot, and after the man accelerated toward him twice, the officer shot and wounded him, according to police. The suspect was admitted to Illinois Masonic Hospital in serious condition, police said.
