Oz Animal Hospital opens in Sauganash on Chicago’s NW Side

by BRIAN NADIG

The recently opened Oz Animal Hospital in Sauganash offers a holistic approach to treating dogs and cats in a low-stress neighborhood environment, according to hospital founder Dr. Tracey Maione.

“I don’t like big hospitals. I like to keep it small and community-based,” Maione said. She said that when owners bring pets in for vaccinations, she likes to sit down and discuss the overall wellness of the pet — from any health concerns to food choices.

Oz opened on Dec. 4 inside the former Mee Mah Chinese restaurant at 4032 W. Peterson Ave.and has been completely remodeled as part of its transformation to an animal clinic. The hospital also has locations in Lincoln Park (across from Oz Park) and Rogers Park.

“I’m originally from Chicago,” Maione said. “I grew up in West Ridge, and I’m very familiar with this neighborhood.” Maione added that around 20 years ago she considered working at a the now-closed veterinary clinic in Sauganash.

Skin problems, possibly caused by allergies, and illnesses that include vomiting and diarrhea are among the top issues which cause owners to bring their pets to the hospital, Maione said. Another is dental health, as owners often do not brush pets’ teeth as much as they should, she said.

The hospital also offers laser therapy that can be effective for the treatment of many different conditions, including degenerative joint disease and inflammatory bowel disease.

“Laser therapy also increases the healing speed for wounds and surgical sites. The therapeutic or cold laser emits low-level light that penetrates tissues and produces biochemical reactions within the cells. These reactions promote cell regeneration and healing and can decrease inflammation and pain,” the hospital’s Web site states.

The hospital also offers micro-chipping and has a laboratory, allowing for the faster processing of blood test results.

Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th) and the Edgebrook-Sauganash Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Oz Hospital at 1p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20. The hospital also is planning to host a community open house, possibly in the spring.
