Principal named for Resurrection HS

by MARIO LEKOVIC

Resurrection Prep High School president Sister Donna Maria Wolowicki has announced the appointment of Maria Hawk as the school’s new principal.

Sister Wolowicki took on the position of president after former principal and president Dr. Lynne Saccaro resigned last year. Since then she has conducted a search for a new principal to focus on academics while she focuses on other affairs.

Hawk will join Resurrection on June 30 after finishing the year as principal of Incarnation School in Palos Heights. Hawk said that she will be transitioning to the new role over the summer, working on the curriculum and spending time getting her feet wet.

"I am delighted to be going to Resurrection, and I look forward to working with teachers, parents and students," Hawk said. "I will be working on creating more rigor in the curriculum and helping to move the school into 21st Century learning."

Hawk said she applied for the position in December because she is pursuing her doctoral degree at Loyola University and working on a project that focuses on curriculum and instruction in high schools. She said that she works with two colleagues on the project, both high school principals, and it made sense to apply.

"It was the right time to move into the environment," Hawk said.

"I am personally committed to Catholic education and the impact the Gospel message can have on the lifetime experiences of students," Hawk said. "I firmly believe in the value of an all-girls school and see the education it can offer as being an uplifting and liberating experience for young women.

Hawk was the principal at Incarnation School for 7 years and Saint Gall School for 1 year. Before that she taught second grade and third grade teacher for 9 years at various schools, including Saint Mary of the Woods School in Chicago.

Hawk has a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Illinois-Chicago, a master of arts in teaching from National Louis University and a master of arts in educational administration from Dominican University.

Hawk and her husband, Steve, have one daughter, who is a student at Illinois Wesleyan University. Hawk played volleyball at Illinois-Chicago, and she has coached for various clubs and schools. While she was at Incarnation School, she also was a coach for the Ignite Volleyball Club.

Saccaro was the school’s principal and president for nearly 6 years. Sister Wolowicki was named the school’s interim president last year, and the Sisters of the Resurrection, the sponsoring congregation of the school, appointed her president several months later.
