Reported stolen car strikes City News Cafe at Six Corners, as 4 arrested & guns found in vehicle

by BRIAN NADIG

City News Cafe, 4018 N. Cicero Ave., suffered significant damage after a reported stolen car which police were attempting to stop struck its storefront at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday, April 16, destroying the outdoor dining area and front windows.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows occupants being ejected from the vehicle as it hit the building. Two of the car’s occupants were arrested on scene while the other two were apprehended a short time later after they had attempted to flee on foot, according to Chicago police. The suspects, identified as three males and one female, ages 17 to 26, were taken to a hospital, and charges are pending, according to police.

It is suspected that the stolen black Kia sedan may have been involved in a burglary incident in the 19th (Town Hall) District, police said. In addition, three guns were found inside the vehicle, police said.

While on patrol, 17th (Albany Park) District officers reportedly noticed that the sedan was disregarding red traffic signals and also became aware that it matched the description of a vehicle which had been reported stolen, police said. The car also reportedly had at least one flat tire.

A traffic stop was then initiated, but the sedan did not pull over and the driver lost control, crashing the vehicle into the building, which is located in the 16th (Jefferson Park) District, police said.

Area Five detectives are investigating the incident.

City News, which was not open when the crash occurred, remained closed Thursday morning while crews cleaned up the debris and made repairs but the store did open later in the day for business. The newsstand, which includes a coffee bar, has been located at Six Corners for years.

“We are thankful for all those who have come by today and shown their support,” City News Cafe owner Joe Angelastri said.
