Roof on Portage Park apartment building collapses; no reported injuries but car damaged from bricks

by ROB MANDIK and BRIAN NADIG

The collapse of the roof on a Potage Park building resulted in no injuries Monday morning, May 7, but the front of a nearby parked vehicle was crushed from falling bricks.

The roof of the three-story apartment building at 5159 W. Cullom Ave. started to collapse at about 9 a.m. The cause of the collapse is not clear, but materials for planned roofing improvements were piled on the middle of the roof at the time of the incident.

As the roof caved in, bricks that were covered by an overhang around the roofline fell to the ground, and some of the bricks hit a sport utility vehicle which was parked on Laramie Avenue, along the west side of the building.

One of the building’s longtime occupants said Monday afternoon that a person on the third floor during the collapse was not hurt and that he is looking for temporary home for his family.

The building was constructed in 1911.
