Sol Space, with yoga, workshare & more, opens in ‘Jeff West’ corridor on Chicago’s NW Side

by BRIAN NADIG

Sol Space, 5922 W. Lawrence Ave., has opened in the increasingly trendy “Jeff West” corridor on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

“We are calling it a community center with different opportunities to connect,” said co-owner Jackie Bravo Vicere, who lives a short walk from the center It opened last month and is celebrating its grand opening from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19.

Vicere said that visitors can connect through “movement,” including yoga and fitness classes, “workshare” space and “workshops,” including self-defense classes for women and photography. Vicere is one of the center’s many yoga instructors and has her photography studio there.

Co-owner is Georgena Hurst, who also owns and operates Sunny Village Cafe, 5918 W. Lawrence Ave., which features a play place for children.

The workshare section includes a printer and offers child care services at Sunny Village from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays.
The word “Sol” was chosen as part of the center’s name because it reflects her Mexican heritage and the plaza where it is located “always has sun because it’s south facing,” Vicere said.

In the past few years many new businesses have opened in the 5900 block of West Lawrence Avenue, and Catalina Plant Co. owner Chris Meyer has dubbed the commercial corridor “Jeff West,” short for Jefferson Park, and the phrase appears to be catching on, as more store owners are using it.

The additional businesses along the corridor include Delightful Pastries, A Taste of the Philippines, Vito’s Vault, Printer’s Row Brewing, Plot Twist Used Books, Lawrence Food & Liquors, and Catalina Plant Co.

The July 19 grand opening for Sol Space will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m., a yoga class demonstration at 4:30 p.m., a meet and greet with “Bluey” at 5 p.m. and Sound Bath at 6 p.m.
