‘Spirit Week’ at Taft HS: taping principal Glowacz to the wall

Taft High School principal Dr. Ryan Glowacz on Dec. 18 volunteered to be taped to a wall — and temporarily suspended off the floor — as part of the school’s “Spirit Week.”
“The thing I didn’t expect was it was very hot. (The duct tape) sort of held in the heat,” Glowacz said.
It took six rolls of blue duct tape and about 20 minutes to complete the job. Students and staff members participated, and a trusted “bodyguard” was nearby because Glowacz said he wanted to make sure his face wasn’t taped.
“My wife even brought by our two kids (and) our two-year-old … even placed tape,” said Glowacz, a 2006 Taft graduate. He’s in his second year at the helm of the school.
During the taping there were wood blocks under his feet, but when the taping was done, the blocks were removed and he was suspended at least a foot off the floor, and that felt a little freaky, Glowacz acknowledged.
“I was suspended for only about a minute,” Glowacz said. “I requested to be down pretty quickly.”
The taping was part of a series of events celebrating the end of the semester. They included an ugly sweater day and food offerings by Taft’s cultural clubs.
Despite some apprehension about being suspended, Glowacz would not rule out doing it again, or perhaps another adventure could be in the mix. He mentioned how a principal at a feeder elementary school volunteered for a dunk tank.
