Taxi business, lack of crosswalks discussed
by BRIAN NADIG
The lack of crosswalks on Lawrence Avenue and changes to the area’s taxi industry were discussed at the June 8 meeting of the Mayfair Civic Association.
There have been no crosswalks on Lawrence between Cicero Avenue and Elston Avenue for at least 14 years, according to association members.
"Part of the reason is the streets don’t line up," said association zoning and development committee chairman Chris Lambesis. "You take your life in your own hands when you’re walking a dog."
One member reported that Alderman Margaret Laurino’s office is looking into the feasibility of installing crosswalks in the area.
Some residents said that pedestrian refuge islands are also needed for Lawrence. The islands are intended to give pedestrians a safe place to wait when they get stuck in the middle of the street because drivers will not yield.
It also was reported that Dispatch Taxi, 4536 N. Elston Ave., is being split into two companies as the result of a legal dispute between the two partners. Each company reportedly is taking control of different properties on the block which Dispatch used.
Some residents said that only one of those taxi companies, Star North Management, has been properly maintaining its premises and taking measures to keep taxicabs from parking on Elston. "Our area is compliant," Star North chief financial officer Anita Cisneros told the association.
It also was announced that the Mayfair Park Advisory Council is sponsoring the showing of the film "Jumanji" at dusk Friday, June 16, at the park, 4550 W. Sunnyside Ave.
The council also will hold a community engagement meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20. The council is pursuing grant opportunities and is seeking input for capital improvements at the park.
