Teen who reportedly was wearing ankle monitor charged with 2 Dunning burglaries

A 19-year-old suspect who reportedly was wearing an ankle monitoring device was arrested on Monday, June 15, in connection with two burglaries reported earlier in the month in the Dunning area on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

The suspect reportedly had been paroled to his girlfriend’s home as part of his earlier release from the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to court records.

In both burglaries, residents reportedly were inside their homes when the alleged break-ins occurred, according to the court proffer document provided by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.

The incidents were reported to have occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 3, and Thursday, June 4, in the 6000 blocks of West Waveland Avenue and West Warwick Avenue, according to Chicago police. As many as four burglary-related incidents were reported in the area between June 1 and 5, but the defendant was charged in connection with just two of the incidents, according to police.

Pictures and video footage of a man seen near some of the homes had been circulating on social media. At least one surveillance camera captured a “G Gatorade” tattoo on the intruder’s right hand, and the tattoo helped police to later identify the suspect, according to court records.

Police were asking anyone whose home in the area was burglarized (or attempted) to file a report.

In one of the reported incidents, a woman told officers that she was sleeping when she was awoken by the sound of someone in her home and she saw a man in her room, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.

The woman reported that the man then fled through the front door, police said. Entry to the home was believed to have been through an unlocked back door, police said.

Jewelry valued at $15,000, an Xbox and a safe containing various documents and two Kimber handguns were reported missing, according to police and court records.

It was later learned that the defendant and his girlfriend were seen on surveillance footage from a pawn shop selling the Xbox, whose serial number matched the one taken from the home, according to the proffer.

At the time of the suspect’s arrest, his girlfriend reportedly was wearing a bracelet taken from the home, the proffer said. During a search warrant executed on the home where they reportedly were staying, officers found a stolen checkbook and two Kimber magazines which could fit in the reported stolen handguns, according to court records.

In another incident, a man reported he was in his living room when he saw another man wearing a mask climb through an unlocked front window, the proffer said. They reportedly made eye contact, and the intruder then jumped out the window and fled, according to court records.

The suspect, who was identified by police as Cortez Washington, age 19, of the 5800 block of West Addison Street, was charged with two felony counts of residential burglary, four misdemeanor counts of resisting an officer and a warrant-related offense, police said.

At a June 17 detention hearing, the suspect was ordered to be detained, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

The suspect’s girlfriend also was taken into custody and faces one charge , according to the state’s attorney’s office and court records. On June 16 she received pre-trial release, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

The number of reported burglaries in the 16th District this year through June 8 is 82, compared to 89 during the same period in 2025, or an 8-percent decrease, according to Chicago police.
