Which draw games offer better odds—and why that matters to you

Understanding the structure and probabilities behind draw games is one of the most practical ways to decide which draw game aligns best with how you prefer to play.
Whether you’re drawn to the bigger, multi-state jackpots or prefer games with better odds and smaller prize pools, each option offered by the West Virginia Lottery comes with its own set of probabilities. Here’s how the odds stack up across some of the most popular draw games—and why those differences might matter to you.
Powerball©: Large jackpots, longer odds
POWERBALL© is one of the best-known draw games in the United States, with drawings every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The game structure—five numbers drawn from a pool of 69, plus one POWERBALL© number from 1 to 26—creates jackpot odds of 1 in 292.2 million.
Despite those long odds, the appeal of POWERBALL© lies in its potential payout. Jackpots regularly climb into the hundreds of millions and can exceed $1 billion when rollovers build momentum. While overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9, the top prize is designed to be difficult to hit—part of what allows it to grow so dramatically.
So if you’re participating in the next POWERBALL draw, it’s helpful to view it as a chance-based opportunity for a very large return—balanced by long odds.
Mega Millions®: Similar structure, updated features
MEGA MILLIONS® shares a similar prize structure to POWERBALL© but draws numbers from a slightly different pool: five numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball from 1 to 25. The odds of winning the jackpot here are 1 in 302.6 million.
However, MEGA MILLIONS® recently updated its format to include a built-in multiplier with every $5 play. This allows non-jackpot prizes to be automatically increased by up to 10X, improving the value of secondary wins.
If you’re comparing odds, both MEGA MILLIONS® and POWERBALL© are on the higher end—but their prizes reflect that design. They offer high-risk, high-reward play models.
Lotto America©: Smaller jackpots, more favorable odds
LOTTO AMERICA© is considered more balanced. You select five numbers from 1 to 52 and one Star Ball from 1 to 10, creating jackpot odds of 1 in 25.9 million. While the jackpot typically starts around $2 million, it rolls over and grows with each drawing, which takes place on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday—just like POWERBALL©.
Compared to the odds for MEGA MILLIONS® and POWERBALL©, LOTTO AMERICA© could be a good option for those looking for a game with lower entry costs and stronger odds of a top-tier prize.
State-exclusive games with better odds
If you’re interested in improving your chances of winning any prize, West Virginia offers exclusive draw games that deliver even more favorable odds, including Daily 3 and Daily 4.
These games allow you to choose three-digit or four-digit combinations, with potential payouts of up to $500 and $5,000, respectively. Odds vary depending on your play style (exact order vs. any order), but they’re often in the 1 in 1,000 range for exact matches.
Why odds matter to you
Understanding the odds helps you align your participation with your expectations and preferences. If you’re interested in aiming for a life-changing jackpot, participating in a POWERBALL© draw makes sense—even knowing the odds are long. But if you’re looking for better overall chances to match a prize tier, a game like LOTTO AMERICA© may better suit your play style.
Importantly, all draw games available through the West Virginia Lottery—whether online via iPLAY or at retail locations—are chance-based. There are no guaranteed outcomes, and no win is ever guaranteed.
