146-unit project proposed for bank site on Belmont

by BRIAN NADIG

A five-story building with ground-floor retail space and 146 residential units on the upper floors is being proposed for the current site of the U.S. Bank at 5850 W. Belmont Ave.

A community meeting on the zoning change proposal will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Saint Ferdinand Church, 3115 N. Mason Ave. Alderman Ariel Reboyras (30th) is asking those who cannot attend the meeting to send an e-mail with their concerns on the proposal to ward30@cityofchicago.org by Aug. 1.

Plans call for the site to be rezoned from B3-1 to a plan development ordinance, which creates custom zoning for the 1.3-acre parcel. The 45-year-old building on the site was once home to Colonial Bank.

Located behind the parcel is a row of single-family homes on West Melrose Street and to the west is Saint Patrick High School, 5900 W. Belmont Ave. The development site also is located about two blocks outside of the 36th Ward.

Additional details about the project were unavailable.
