Local Crime from 17th District 10-7-17
A MAN WAS fatally wounded and his body was discovered at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, on a footbridge in the 5000 block of North Bernard Street over the North Branch of the Chicago River, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
Officers responded to a call of shots fired and discovered the body of the man on the ground with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds, according to police. The man was pronounced dead at about 12:40 a.m., police said. A witness reported that she had heard three gunshots, according to police.
The man was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Jose Rico, age 27, of the 3400 block of West Wilson Avenue.
In related news, a man was placed arrested for allegedly shoving an officer at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the 5000 block of North Bernard Street, according to police.
Officers responded to a call of a group of people congregating in the public way and discovered people setting up a memorial site for Rico and playing music loudly from a parked car, police said. When officers approached the group the man admitted to smoking cannabis and said that he was remembering his friend who was killed recently and that the man became belligerent when asked for identification, and that he disregarded verbal commands and allegedly shoved one of officers and resisted arrest, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Jefferson Gomez, age 22, of the 4900 block of North Lawndale Avenue.
A MAN REPORTED that a man threatened him with a handgun at about 3 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, in an alley in the 4700 block of North Keystone Avenue, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The man reported that he was returning home through the alley when a silver Infiniti occupied by four men sped through the alley and almost hit him, according to police. The man reported that car then reversed to approach him and that the driver exited and asked, "what’s your problem," and that the man then pointed a blue-steel Glock handgun with an attached laser sight at his face and threatened him, according to police. The man reported that he was able to walk back into his home, police said.
THE MANAGER of the 7-Eleven store, 2900 W. Montrose Ave., reported that shots were fired outside of the business between 3:15 and 3:20 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 40-year-old man reported that he saw on a video camera a man drive up in a black 2005 Mazda sedan and engage in an argument with another man on the street, pull out a handgun and fire three shots towards the other man before driving away, according to police.
A WOMAN reported that she was robbed at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, in the 4300 block of West Montrose Avenue, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 27-year-old woman reported that two men approached, implied they had a gun, and took her backpack containing her cell phone, a six-pack of beer and her wallet containing $300 in cash, according to police.
A MAN AND a woman reported that they were robbed at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, in the 4000 block of North Spaulding Avenue, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The two 20-year-olds reported that they were exiting their parked vehicle when two men approached them, and that one man held his hand under his shirt implying he was carrying a gun, according to police. The man reported that he could see a cell phone light under the shirt and believed there was no gun, that he fought the two men before the woman’s cell phone fell out of her pocket, and that they grabbed her cell phone off the ground and fled in a dark colored sport utility vehicle driven by a third person, according to police.

The 36-year-old man reported that two men approached him, with one holding his hand in his right sweatshirt pocket implying he had a gun and that they demanded his belongings, and that he gave them his cell phone and wallet containing $150 in cash before they fled into a dark colored sport utility vehicle that may be a Ford Explorer, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that he was robbed at gunpoint between 2 and 2:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the 3900 block of North Kostner Avenue, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 42-year-old man reported that he was using his cell phone and looked up to see two men pointing guns at his chest, who then grabbed his duffel bag containing his cell phone, keys and $120 worth of items and clothes before fleeing on foot, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that he was robbed at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the 3800 block of North Richmond Street, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 19-year-old man reported that he was walking home and saw a silver Chrysler circling the block and that a man later approached and asked him whether he or his brother was in a gang, to which he replied "no," according to police. The man reported that the other man then lifted his shirt and revealed a 9mm handgun, and that another man punched him in the head and took his backpack containing various identification and transit cards, school books and materials, before they fled into the silver Chrysler driven by a third man, according to police.
A MAN REPORTED that a man broke into his home in the 3100 block of West Berteau Ave at about 10:50 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 29-year-old man reported that he was in his bedroom and heard a loud crash at his rear door and a man he tried to enter his bedroom, and that the man then ran away with his wallet from his kitchen counter containing three credit cards, a drivers license and $25 in cash, according to police.
The man was described as black, age 17 to 25, approximately 5-8 and 135 pounds, with brown eyes and short black hair.
A WOMAN reported that her apartment in the 4000 block of North Mozart Street was burglarized between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 43-year-old woman reported that when she returned home she discovered that the rear door had been opened and that a cell phone valued at $150, a Macbook laptop computer valued at $500, an Xbox video game console valued at $300, and a gold necklace and earrings valued at $500, were missing,
THE OWNER of the Pulaski Discount store, 4157 W. Montrose Ave., reported that the store was burglarized at about 2:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, according to 17th (Albany Park) District police.
The 45-year-old man reported that when he returned to the business he discovered that $950 in cash was missing and three boxes of store items were outside of the building, according to police. Officers discovered a hole in the brick wall that may have served as an entry point, and that the security camera’s digital video recording system was cut and stolen, police said.
LINCOLNWOOD
A MAN WAS arrested for possession of stolen property at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the 6400 block of Navajo Avenue, according to Lincolnwood police.
Officers were patrolling an area in the village after three car burglaries were reported in the 6500 block of Le Mai Avenue between Oct. 1 and 2 and discovered a man walking near Le Mai and Devon Avenues, stopped him, and found various belongings including women’s sunglasses, watches and credit cards not containing his name, according to police.
Police said that the man then ran away and that they arrested him by Navajo and Ionia Avenues after a chase, police said. Officers traced one of the credit cards to the owner of a car that was burglarized on Le Mai Avenue, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as James Thomas, age 20, of the 10,000 block of South Hoxie Avenue.
A MAN WAS charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following his arrest at about 2:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the 3800 block of Devon Avenue, according to Lincolnwood police.
Officers saw a vehicle driving at a high speed in the 4400 block of Devon Avenue and stopped it in the 3800 block of Devon, and that the man was arrested after he did not have a valid driver’s license or car insurance and he failed sobriety test, according to police.
The suspect was identified by police as Sergio Esquivel-Martinez, age 29, of the 6300 block of West Cornelia Avenue.
