A neighborhood tradition — Tarpey’s Pharmacy — is closing  in Sauganash

by BRIAN NADIG

Tarpey’s Pharmacy, a Sauganash landmark, is closing its doors on Wednesday, Aug. 21, after 51 years in business.

“We will miss you and wish you the best,” a sign inside the store, 5933 N. Cicero Ave., said.

Robert Tarpey bought the pharmacy on May 7, 1973, and operated the business until his passing in March of 1987, leaving it to his wife Carole, according to their son Patrick Tarpey, who took over in 2007.

“We focus on personalized service. I know most customers by name, and we give quicker service than the larger chains,” Patrick Tarpey said last year during the store’s 50th anniversary. “Many families come back for generations. Kids grow up coming here and move back to the neighborhood. It’s fun to work here and see all the people.”

The store’s prescriptions are being transferred on Aug. 22 to the Walgreens at 6798 N. Lincoln Ave., but should be available at any Walgreens, according to Tarpey.
