Antioch Pizza to open 1st Chicago location this month at 5750 N. Milwaukee; owner grew up nearby

by BRIAN NADIG
The owner of the new Antioch Pizza Shop opening this month at 5750 N. Milwaukee Ave. will be a familiar face to many local residents.
Tom Sadowski grew up near the Nagle-Naples intersection in the Gladstone-Norwood Park area, and he was a frequent customer of the storefront’s former occupant, Papa Joe’s Pizza, which closed earlier this year. “I grew up on it,” said the 27-year-old, who went to Saint Tarcissus School and Mother Guerin High School, which became co-educational before closing about 5 years ago.
The Milwaukee Avenue location marks Antioch’s first in the city of Chicago. Sadowski owns the franchise along with his grandparents, Tom Sr. And Carmelo, and will be operating the business along with his college friend, Zak Kluczynski.
The two friends learned the ropes of the business by working and managing at the company’s flagship location in Antioch for more than six months.
“This was always our plan from Day One: manage and then open our own place,” Sadowski said, adding that he’s been a big fan of Antioch’s pizza for years, as his mother lives near the Antioch location.
Antioch Pizza Shop will soon have locations in at least five states, including Wisconsin, Alabama and Texas and North Carolina and has licensed partnerships in Minnesota where its pizza is sold in other restaurants.
“They won best pizza in the Chicago area last year (WGN), and the beef is really good. I think it’s going to compete in this neighborhood,” Sadowski said. “There’s a lot of people in this neighborhood who already know Antioch.”
The styles of pizza include thin, double decker, pan and stuffed, and other menu items include pasta, wings, salads and sandwiches.
“It’s all good,” Kluczynski said.
Planned hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. The shop’s telephone number is 773-570-5020, and more information is available at www.antiochpizzashop.com The planned opening date is Tuesday, Oct. 14.
