Armed robbery spree reported in Portage Park area on Sunday

A group of armed assailants is suspected in about 10 robberies on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 17, including three incidents in the Portage Park area, according to Chicago police.
The assailants reportedly displayed handguns and were driving a stolen silver Kia Sportage, which was recovered in the 11th (Harrison) Police District, according police. No arrests have been reported in connection with the incidents.
Two of the men were described as Black, in their 20s and wearing dark clothing, including black ski masks. The third was described as Black and wearing a black ski mask.
Two men reported they were robbed at gunpoint at about 2:35 p.m. near their parked car in the 5200 block of West Waveland Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
Two wallets were reported stolen, and the two gunmen fled in a Sportage, which was driven by a third man, according to police.
An armed robbery also was reported to have occurred at about 2:40 p.m. in an alley in the 4900 block of West Hutchinson Street, police said.
Several men reported that they were in a garage when three gunmen approached and announced a robbery, according to police.
Two men reported that they were patted down, but nothing was taken from them, while a third man was slapped in the back of his head by one of the assailants and had his cell phone and credit cards stolen, police said. The phone was found ringing inside the stolen Sportage when it was recovered in the 3300 block of West Douglas Boulevard, police said.
An attempted armed robbery was reported to have occurred at about 2:40 p.m. in an alley in the 5200 block of West Roscoe Street, police said.
A man reported an assailant exited a silver vehicle and pointed a gun at his head, demanding that he empty his pockets, police said. The gunman left without stealing any items, police said.
The number of reported robberies in the 16th District through Sept. 17 this year is 109, up from 85 during the same period in 2022. The number of reported robberies in the neighboring 17th (Albany Park) District is 169, up from 108, and 514 in the neighboring 25th (Grand Central) District, up from 237.
